ZF serviced only 3.5 litrs of trans fluid came out
I serviced a customers ZF on a D2 today. I drained 3.5 litres of trans fluid from the box, and refilled it with 6 litres.
I rang the customer to enquire who serviced the trans last. He didn't know but had it at a rover mechanic for some work and they told him that the trans had been replaced before. (they didn't do any work on it)
I'm guessing the trans had been serviced by a mechanic/ or owner that just filled the sump up until it was level with the fill plug. Not following the correct filling method of having the engine running and circulating the fluid through the pumps and valves. Suprisingly it ran ok with less trans fluid.

Probably obvious but did you check the gearbox (man?) and had it leaked forward?
Forget that I just reread the post.
