    Slow Disco

While my TD5 ( Chipped, EGR blanked ) D2 is off the road I am driving my son's
300TDi D1. This car seems to be really underpowered. It won't go up my driveway
unless I slip the clutch massively ( I don't do this ) or select low range. Once it gets
going it seems to take a long time to spool up the turbo, and then it's fine, unless
someone puts a hill in the way. I see these things every day towing boats and vans,
but this one would be hard pressed to tow a box trailer.

It starts an runs fine, blows very little black smoke and will hold on a hill on
compression. I'm wondering if it is over tyred, as it has 31's on it, but I would have
thought it should be able to manage those.
Does anyone have any thoughts? I don't expect it to go as well as mine, but it's a
2.5 turbo diesel, and so is mine. It should go better than it does.

at a guess i would say the diaphram in the top of the injector pump is on the weakest/leanest setting,- undo the 4 top screws and have a look? then turn the diaphram so the striker[you will see the cam pin on the diaphram]can move further and it will go a whole lot better off the line, you cant stuff this simple adjustment up.

When did it last have a timing belt? Tappet adjustment? I would check these items first. Even if it has had a timing belt recently, was it timed correctly?
Don't do anything until these basic checks are done.

Unknown. It used to get serviced by Fred Smith, but that was ages ago. I'll check.

Ok. It seems that the timing belt has not been done in anyone's recollection, and I'm
told the engine is quite tappety ( my ears are broken ). So, when I get back from
Brisbane I'll tackle it, but I have a question or two.

    1. What effect does the belt have on tune? Do they stretch or something? I've done
many timing belts in my time, on petrol engines in general and on Fiat twin cams in
particular, and in my experience they are either working or you are up for an engine
rebuild at best, as the pistons will strike the valves, with predictable consequences.
But I've never known one to alter tune. I'll still change it, as I'd like to know it's done.

    2. Do I really need LRT's to do the job? I've been diving into RAVE, and the job seems
pretty straightforward but for the 'special tools' bit. Can I get by without them?

    3. Are there any pitfalls I should be wary of?

I had a Daihatsu Rocky that had similar symptoms. I'm my case it was the hose that supplies the pressure signal to the boost compensator on the fuel pump. It was blocked with sooty muck ( before I had a chance to block the egr) no extra fuel on boost made it a real slug.

You are better off using the correct tools makes things so much easier

some supply the locking tool in the timming belt kit.

correct tappet adjustment is critical with the 300 tdi or they have no go what so ever

check the valve caps as well, another area that can be a problem

    hope all works out,

I very quickly ran over the tappets and it made a big difference, so I will do 'em again with more time. Should they be done hot or cold?

Valve caps? Rave isn't very clear. Do they have a lash cap on the valve stem?

Yes, they have a lash cap on the valve stem, and can wear thru, need to check them all then do tappets

    cheers Sumo.
