Brake Problem HELP

Hi Guys
Have a problem with the ABS on my 97 Disco.
This problem didn't happen all the time.
When you pressed the peddle down the feeling was like a chain jumping a sprocket or a gear not going in correct and the brakes wouldn't work, then they would.
Press the peddle down when starting and the same feel happend only for a split second.
Removed the fuse for the ABS and the brakes work perfect.
Could this be a sensor or ABS pump problem.

Sounds similar to the problem I had with my Rangie.

Does the ABS warning light come on as well ?

Mine came on intermittently, or would stay on beyond the initial self tests it does.

It was a dodgy wheel speed sensor. I replaced it with a second hand one and it has been fine ever since (touch wood).

If it is, you need to get the fault checked and cleared from the ECU.

Cheers
Dave

Hi adm333
Yes the light came on every so often and the brakes then worked fine.
I'll have a look at the sensors.
Do you have to go to landrover to have the have the fault removed.
Any info would be appreciated.

If the light comes on at any other time than at start up, then you have an ABS fault registered.

It needs to be hooked up to an LR "Testbook" diagnostic computer to a) translate the fault and clear it once the source of the problem is fixed.

Your profile doesn't say where you are ?

You may be able to find an LR specialist other than a dealer service centre that has the appropriate equipment. I am in Brisbane and found such a place. Other guys here are better placed to tell you about other states. My father in Melbourne swears by Ritters Automotive at Burwood.

I rang around and got a 2nd hand front wheel speed sensor from Land Vehicle Spares (see recommended suppliers) for $220.

I did post an article I found in the course of doing research that is a DIY ABS fault code translation. I never actually tried it but I will try to find the thread and point it out to you.

Cheers

Found it.

Note 1: I have not tried this and cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information. I copied it directly from another Range Rover forum. I have no idea if the ABS ECU is the same in your vehicle.

Note 2: Its from the USA so don't spend too much time looking under the driver's seat. Look under the passenger's seat.

.......quote

The ABS "display" is the actual abs light on the dash. It has its own computer, but not its own display box like the ECU. The procedure is as follows, according to my less than perfect memory: Under the drivers seat there is a white multi pin plug that has nothing connected to it. This is the testbook connection for the ABS. Make a short jumper from a piece of 14 ga wire and plug it into the black and into the black/purple wires' socket on the plug. The ABS light will them begin to flash a sequence of times, five flashes first, pause then a number of flashes, short pause, then an other number, long pause, repeat. So if it flashed twice, then five times, it is indicating fault 25. Then you look at the fault codes, whatever they may be!

Then the actual fault codes.....

To read the ABS error codes, follow the instructions in the article "Reading ABS error codes"

Code 2-6 - Faulty stoplight switch or wiring. Fuse A5 blown or not fitted

Code 2-7 - Continuous supply to ECU with ignition off. Faulty valve relay or wiring

Code 2-8 - No voltage to ABS solenoid valves. Faulty valve relay or wiring.

Code 2-12 - Front right, too large an air gap or the sensor has been forced out by exciter ring.
Code 2-13 - Rear left, too large an air gap or the sensor has been forced out by exciter ring.
Code 2-14 - Front left, too large an air gap or the sensor has been forced out by exciter ring.
Code 2-15 - Rear right, too large an air gap or the sensor has been forced out by exciter ring.

Code 3-0 to 3-9 - Open circuit in connection from ECU to solenoid valve in booster, or in ECU

Code 4-0 to 4-9 - Short circuit to earth in connection from ECU to solenoid valve in booster

Code 4-12 - Front right, wiring to sensor broken or sensor resistance too high.
Code 4-13 - Rear left, wiring to sensor broken or sensor resistance too high.
Code 4-14 - Front left, wiring to sensor broken or sensor resistance too high.
Code 4-15 - Rear right, wiring to sensor broken or sensor resistance too high.

Code 5-0 to 5-9 - Short circuit to 12volt in connection from ECU to solenoid valve in booster, possible earth fault.

Code 5-12 - Front right, intermittent fault with sensor or wiring
Code 5-13 - Rear left, intermittent fault with sensor or wiring
Code 5-14 - Front left, intermittent fault with sensor or wiring
Code 5-15 - Rear right, intermittent fault with sensor or wiring

Code 6-0 to 6-9 - Short circuit between two connection from ECU to solenoid valve in booster.

Code 6-12 - Front right, no output from sensor, sensor may have too large an air gap.
Code 6-13 - Rear left, no output from sensor, sensor may have too large an air gap.
Code 6-14 - Front left, no output from sensor, sensor may have too large an air gap.
Code 6-15 - Rear right, no output from sensor, sensor may have too large an air gap.

Thanks for the info but I think I might try and find someome in the Wollongong NSW area the look for the fault
I would like it fixed as the ABS saved me twice from hitting another car.
Thanks again.
