Holden 6 and gearbox conversion to series 3??
Evenin All,
I've picked up a reco'd blue motor and i'm starting to plan the conversion. I've been thinking, why not bolt in the aussie 4-speed that came with it as well? After all it'll be cheaper to overhaul, stronger, and should fit where the old landy box was. I'm thinking of making up an adaptor and support bearing using the holden extension housing which would then bolt to the transfer case. Similar to LandyAndys 302 conversion setup. Has anyone tried this? More importantly, can anyone see a problem with this conversion?
Thanks in advance
Bill

old dog, any chance you could post a pic of the box?
I was thinking along the same lines but have been too busy to get to a wreckers to have a look at one.

I'm not so sure an M20 would be as strong as you may think, they are **** weak, I've broken heaps in my younger days in Toranas. What you should do is buy a Supra conversion bell housing for the Holden and bolt a 5 speed Hilux box and transfer case behind it you will get an overdrive and some better ratios for a 4x4. Hilux boxes are the same as a Supra but have different ratios and mainshaft to drive the transfer box.

Crossy, unfortunately no as i don't have a digital camera, it's exactly the same as a holden three speed but with the reverse gear in the extension housing. If i do modify it i'll be sure to post a pic (steal someones camera ) I can provide you with dimensions if that helps?
Shaunp, i'm working on the idea that it'll be cheaper and less complicated than the usual conversion as i'm using all holden components (clutch, pressure plate, spigot, bell housing, clutch cable etc) which i already have + cheaper to rebuild if needed, and also i'm thinking it's stronger than the landy box. I know the M20's aren't overly strong but do you think it'd handle a standard 202 in the landy better than the standard box? I'd love to bolt up an overdrive box but too much $$$ that should go to my drag racing habit I know i don't have to explain to you about how it is with speed

I'm not so sure the M20 would be much if any stronger and I reckon the ratios may too tall in in 1,2 and 3 M22 maybe ok for ratios. I reckon your making work for yourself for little if any gain. I'd just do the normal coversion if it were me rather then fabrcating stuff and you will also have no trouble with rego as it's a common swap. I reckon the I'd go down the Hilux box path if you wanted to be flash, this would be a real easy conversion behind a Holden.

Just how weak are the landy boxes anyway?
i Know they break when syncro clips fall out and jam in the gear train.
(there must be a mod to stop this)
synchros wear out causing 3 & 4 to jump out of gear.
(i,ve heard rumours there is also a mod to fix this)
they do go bang, but is this just because most are 30 years old and have probally never been touched before?
I think all replacement gears and shafts are now aftermarket.
could these be stronger.
sorry if this is a bit of a hijack old dog but i am also about to do an engine transplant and also need a gearbox solution. The hilux box sounds good but i think $$$$. (plus i hate jap crap) If the original box can be strengthend sweet, so much less drama.
btw there are a few guys on the lre forum who are running 3.5v8's and tdi's in front of the landy box. v8 aparantly 5 years but says he takes it easy???

I think the series boxes are ok really, a mate of mine Brad has had a 2a and a 3 both with red motors for years and has never blowen up a box, the 3 jumps out of 3rd on trailing throttle but it did that before the holden was fitted. Brad is hard on a car, he pulls boats and has little sympathy for anything mechanical, the 3 has big BFG MTs on it etc. One easter coming back from Red Rock to Brisbane he kept with my Disco at 120k and he was pulling a tinny, loaded to gunals with camping gear, including a bar fidge. I broke a few diffs a lot of rear axles but no boxes in my 2A.

Yup, sounds a bit like it Crossy. Given a choice i'd use the landy box but i've heard so many people say it's weak especially behind a 202. I think Hellspawn has some problems but Jays a bit of a rev head i think So i think the question now is - Does anyone out there have suggestions for mods / rebuild tips etc to improve the landy box?

I learnt to drive and owned a ser IIA with a 186 redline, yella terra heads & 350 Holley fitted. Std IIA box went pretty well but for 2 problems. 1. The clutch pressure plate crapped itself once (not nice) & 2. Mainshaft snapped (also not nice).
I'd venture that #2 may have been helped by #1 but otherwise it was good. Only other change was to the transfer case where I fitted a 'high ratio' transfer case. Basically old transfer case with RR gearset in it. Gave something in the order of a 25% overdrive in high and basically retained the low gearing.
For an old IIA it went like stink, saw 140 a few times but then the rattles and road manners became a little scary.
