Non starting problem (FIXED!!! hopefully)
Had a prob after filling up with fuel for the first time after buying my '95 300tdi Discovery. Turned the key and hazard lights started flashing and it wouldn't start. Lights would flash for a few seconds, stop for a few seconds and repeat the sequence a few times. A bloke came over, reached in and turned off the aircon and it started.
This hadn't happended in the 2 days prior to filling up so wondered if the little sticker at the filler neck saying "Don't overfill" means I overfilled it, causing the problem.
Yesterday went to move off on a bit of an incline and thought I had the handbrake on but didn't, it just didn't want to pull away under about 2000rpm, I hadn't had any prob on the flat. I figure this might one of those things people (who have never owned a LR deisel) warn you about with the Deisel.
Cheers, Ian.

TDi
I dont know about the overfilling part, it should just run out the overflow, maybe there is a sensor on the charcol canister for the overflow. Cant see why it would cause all the lights to come on though. The tdi do not do much below 1800rpm, yours being a manual I assume. It will just take time getting used to driving a turbo diesel and knowing what rpms are required. It was the same with my 97tdi manual and even with the 2000 Defender Extreme I now have but to a lesser extent. The auto handles the turbo diesel better as it tends to keep the rpm up due to the torque converter. What you are probablly refering to is known as turbo lag. Thsi is the time it takes the turbo to spin up and produce boost. Without the turbo on these things you would be better off walking. The weird thing is taht as soon as you lock the diff in high or low the lag is not an issue. There are some turbo and injector pump mods that can be done but will come at a cost and possibly a compromise. One of the best is to actually fit a bigger better intercooler.

Thanks CraigE,
makes me feal a bit better that it's fairly normal to get the revs up a bit to start off. I noticed in the handbook that it tells you to start off in low range when towing a heavy trailer, so I was hoping I didn't have to resort to that.
Cheers, Ian.

When cold they are really slow on a hill take off. Is your car fitted with a factory imobilizer, if so this will be the failing to start flashing light thing, they get dry joints in them and the cct board cracks, LR sell a bypass cable for them.

Thanks shaunp,
Not sure if factory fitted, has a little square block with a red LED in it at the bot drivers side of windscreen and a similar size keyring thing that you place on the windscreen one and it does nothing but the led stays on most of the time, will check into it a bit more.
Cheers.
