Hanging the vehcile from there and the massive forces generated in a snatch recovery are a different thing. Like towing vs snatching.

I was talking to the dealer today, and asked him about towpoints. He said that Landrover used to supply tow hitches. He said they don't do that anymore because people were ripping them off 8O 8O
The edict from land rover is that you should use a towbar at the back (hayman reese style) and wrap the strap around the pin. That sounds fair enough.
However, at the front the recomendation is to wrap the strap around the front axle (between the steering arm). He said that this is highly re-inforced, and that you could dangle the vehicle from there. 8O 8O
Any thoughts on that?

though the above will work,,
even under the most severe conditions,,
its just too often too hard,,
we seem to all want
fittings on the front,
that bolt directly to the chasis
that pull on both chasis rails
and fries,,,,
it is a technically/legally VERY difficult situation.
a bit of common sense is always more important than legal regs.
(having said that the guy that was killed on fraser from a flying tow hitch may be able to sue someone,,, but who??)
unfortunately, you dont need common sense to get bogged.
and hey, I get bogged ( ) on the beach half a dozen times a year,,
( but it may be caused by having 36 odd lb all round )
but its never below the hi-water mark.
The difference in attitude when driving above and below the water mark is, and should be enormous.

He could let his tyres down a bit when he's on sand, but NO.
Not one for conventional wisdom, that Pedro.

I would not be to keen on wrapping a snatch strap around the front diff. I fitted a couple of recovery hooks to my defender a few weeks ago. Approx $16 each from ARB. I enlarged one hole and drilled a new in the chassis. I have a bullbar fitted and it was a pain to hold the bolt while doing up the nut. Click on my link below to view photos.
