Hey guys,
Just want to know how difficult this would be to achieve and what should I expect to pay for a second hand EFI set up off a Disco or whatever.
I expect this will give the old girl a bit more go and improve appalling fuel economy.
Motor is in good nic so no need to throw it out in favour of a whole new motor which already has EFI.
Any thoughts??
Cheers
Mick

Hi
Depending on your mechanical / electronic willingness I would look at something like a megasquirt DIY EFI setup. I am in the process of doing one to a 2.25 and plan to retrofit one to a Windsor V8 soon.
The rover EFI systems arn't that good. IMHO

Mick, I converted a 77 to "Federal" injection from a SD1 several years ago. this is like 3.5 Flapper injection but has a different plenum.
Anyway here is my 2 cents worth
Go for a Hotwire injection. early Discos have this for a 3.5.
make sure the injection is a complete as possible and includes the MAF ( mass airflow meter) , and if possible the fuel pump and even fuel tank as all these must change. of course you must have the ECU and loom.
The heads should be modded by grinding a little relief as per the valley gasket. This can be done in situ as long as you are careful to not get swarf anywhere.
The fuel lines will be the biggest expense, as you need a high pressure line from the tank to the engine. I bought rubber hose but it would be best to be original steel. If you cannot get a tank cheap enough you have to create a swirl pot. to feed the high pressure pump. I used a Facet to feed the Bosch high pressure pump. The high pressure pump must be below the normal fuel level in the tank.
It is all time consuminng. I got the injection for $300 and it cost me $1000 all up as it didn't come with the fuel pump. These are over $250 or so.
BUT you will not get all that much better fuel economy. carbys in good nick with new needles and jets set lean will get as good on the road. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are polluting less.
So look to pay maybe $700 to $1000 for a complete system and to be up for another $500- 1000 in bits and pieces , depending on how much gear comes with it.

Rich,
I won't blab on about my opinion that Megasquirt is still nerd territory again.
However If he is buying manifolds etc etc etc, the extra cost of the electronic gear is not much, and it can be troubleshooted ( troubleshot?) by any specialist so that he can get the thing to run correctly, and be sure all the sensors are OK.
THEN is the time to start thinking about Megasquirt and start his whole installation and tuning nightmare. Onc ehe knows that all the sensors he will use with megasquirt are actually present and accounted for.
