Is that Teflon Tape?
Hey Landy - hows the oil pressure gauge install going?
I took my oil pressure sender unit down to my local engineering supplies and they recon the oil pressure sender tread is M10 x 1.0.
Whereas the water temp sender unit is 1/8 NPTF.
Your local VDO supplier should also be able to sell you a brass T piece to run the oil pressure sender for the new guage AND the oil pressure sender for the original idiot light - about $12 each

I dropped into Pirtek for a couple more of those t pieces, and they didn't have any. it was then I discovered that which you found out: I used a screw pitch gauge (both metric and and imp) and my oil press switch came out as imperial. But all things being equal, M10 x 1.0 sounds pretty good. Funnily though, the t-piece I took a pic of, which I thought was 5/16, is actually called the same as the water temp switch - 1/8 nptf. And to top it off, I've misplaced my original t-piece.
As to how far I've got - been spending time tracing an intermittant fault that blows my no.14 fuse annonyingly once a week.
When I get my gauges up and running, I'll send you a pic.

ps: With G thanks Guv'nor,
I spoke to a very helpful guy (Albert) at Olympic Instruments at Pymble (North Shore, Sydney).
He has the brass VDO T pieces for both M10 and 1/8 NPT - will drop in with my oil pressure sender tomorrow to buy one.
Will keep you updated.

ohhh and next time I'll look how I typed your name Langy!!!

Right, 300 TDI oil pressure sender is a M10 tread.
I bought a VDO adapter that has M10 male at one end and M10 Female the other. Half way down the brass adapter is a threaded hole for the almost standard 1/8 NPT sender unit used on most elec oil pressure gauages.

Mine cost $13 from a VDO instrument supplier.

Interesting that the water temp sender is a tapered 1/8 NPT tread.
On their advice, they recommend not using tape when fitting a tapered tread as it could lead to false readings due to the conductivity of the tape.
On the straight tread, like my oil pressure switch, they recommend using brass washers - or at least fibre washers.

A little more of the problem solved. Pirtek Mascot had the t-pieces in 1/8 npt, and the arguement about the differences with NPT,BSP,and metric threads comes out to this: they are reasonably close so you can mix and match in a normal environment. However, if you start going to extreme high pressure, tolerances and extra heavy duty use, then that's when the differences occur. ( And presumably failures). So, for $5 ea, I'll use the NPT t-piece with the metric thread on the oil switch, and given my TDi isn't a jet engine, it should last for a very long time.

ps: If you want a replacement for the joiners coming off the turbo to air pipes to the injector pump and bypass valve, Pirek have push fit type connectors in 1/4 BSP that are neat and tidy. ( $5 also)
See ya
just an updated:
installed the T piece and the sender unit - not mounted the gauge yet but is fully working:

Just wondering, do u think vibrations would work it lose or even break one of those components ?
