That is my point.
In both cases the ORIGINAL fill of ATF was changed to 90 gear oil with total gearbox failure shortly after.
And both instances were at L/R dealers.
There was a L/R dealer in Armidale until a couple of years ago. When I went there looking for an indicator actuator (plastic moulding which locates on the shaft behind the steering wheel) I was looked at as if I was an alien!
I am thinking that some of these places given L/R dealerships were not up to scratch

I use a small shifter on the torx bit. I changed the oil a few days ago to Castrol Syntrans again - right for another 80k-100k kms.
Early R380 do not use torx bungs or is that just the tc I am sure my has 1/2" square.
I've had four Defenders ranging from 1995 to 2002 and all had torx filler plugs on the gearbox. ATF is no longer recommended for the R380 and hasn't been for quite some time. The recommendation is MTF94.
I can get mine in there with the ratchet but if I wind it out much it all jams together. Solution is to just crack it with the ratchet and then remove it by hand.
Just checked mine and it is a no name thing that measures just shy of 2 inches long.
If your torx bit is too long then would it be possible to cut the actual star bit down so it is long enough to make good contact into the bung but still short enough to get the ratchet in there?
Torx bit with a ring spanner(14mm/9/16 I think) and in my 98 fender there is heaps of room.My gearbox has 402,000kms on it,400,000 with Transmax M and it is going strong so I don't listen to people who say ATF is not right for them. Pat
