    Solenoid

G'day all. I just had the RACV here because my D2 TDI 2001 went into Limp mode. He plugged in his computer analysis machine and said it was the solanoide. He reset it and said it should'nt happen again. The problem is it still makes a clunking sound when going down from 3rd to 1st. He seems to think its the solanoide. Has anyone else been in this situation and can you offer me any advice. I'm off to Darwin in July so I want things running well. Cheers, Mick.

Solenoid ? sounds like auto problem to me or maybe he means a solenoid that assists with gear changes in the box.

Isn't there a kickdown solenoid in autos?
I've always had manuals, so no expert by any stretch

The man should have said you which solenoid cos the diagnostic protocol is made to clearely name them if a fault is present(as long as a dedicated LR scantool is used, a generic reader might be vague)

there are 4 solenoids in the valve block for: 2 x shift controll, 1 x pressure control and 1 x lock-up control so if you have the exact fault code you can buy it and replace it yourself if you are handy and you have tools... it's doable with the box in situ, the procedure is described in RAVE - Automatic gearbox - Repairs, changed the lock-up solenoid once on a friend's car without being mechanics...took us about 3 hours without any hurry

so find out exactly the fault code cos it will tell you which one it is:
P0743(7, 25) =* Torque converter lock-up solenoid (MV 3), open or short circuit
P0748(10, 28)=* Pressure regulating solenoid (MV 4), open or short circuit
P0753(8, 26)=* Shift solenoid (MV 1), open or short circuit
P0758(9, 27)=* Shift solenoid (MV 2), open or short circuit

there might be intermittent faults with them but as long as there's a fault code logged you will know which one

when you know you can buy new solenoid or find a second hand working valve block and replace it, the part numbers are in microcat, e.g. (nr 2, 3, 4) Allbrit.de - Ersatzteile f?r LAND ROVER & MG ROVER
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned

You can buy the solenoid and all other parts from ZF Australia. Their prices are reasonable.

If it's making a clunking noise during downshift that sounds like a broken damper spring though.
