    First Start - Diesel Engine

    Hello All,

I have a Series III diesel that I bought last year that was already out of the donor vehicle. I want to make up a timber frame to secure it to and have a go at get it running.

I am planning on hooking up an electric fuel pump to prime the system and have a return pipe to the diesel tank. It still has a starter motor and alternator with the fan belt in place. I will be rigging up a radiator.

Apart from hooking up the battery and checking the coolant level and oil levels what other checks should I make before attempting to start it. Oh I will have a "kill switch" set up too. I will hook up a diesel ignition switch as well.

I do not know anything about the history of this motor including how it ran the last time it started, or when it last ran. It might have been years ago.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Pull the injectors and spin it over to make sure it has oil pressure before letting it fire.

    G'day Paul,

No, it is the one we collected locally where you bought two vehicles off the same bloke. One of them was the station wagon that had the high speed gearbox that you wanted.

The engines from the Gympie area are petrol motors. I have one of them going. The other one I have yet to tinker with.

    Kind Regards

its a mechanical injector pump, unless its a lte model engine in which case electrical kill will work.

leave the injectors in place and alone pull the low plugs put a teaspoon of oil down each hole.

check you oil and coolant flow and ccrank it over on the starter with the injector lines cracked on the injectors. after it stops misting the taspoon of oil out of the low plug holes and the oil pressure is up set the injetor pump to the run position and crank it again until the unions begin to spit fuel.

with tht done, ut the glow plugs back in, tighten the unions and hook up the glow plugs via the glow resistor, glow it for 20 seconds and crank it. if you got it all good and the compression is good it'll start. If you've got the fuel set high becarguel the start up torque can kick the engine around a lot, I normall han a seafety chain from a crane unless Im on a heaviely secuored stand..

    Hello Dave,

Thank you for the tips. If the start up can be that rough I will put the engine in a spare chassis and chain the chassis down to the trailer. Having spare parts does come in handy sometimes.

    Kind Regards
