go the RR Ferno!!!
theres an '82 model 4 sale up here for 3+1/2.
 just as an option i am looking at different motor g/box combo's to put in the series 2,dont want to go radical, just want a quieter motor/box combo possibly with 5 gears not four, and without too many mods needing to be done, and i dont want to go the holden red motor path
have been thinking of a tojo motor / gbox maybe out of my hi-varra,since it has been quite capable with what i have thrown at it thus far ,just body is failing(metal fatigue!)just wondering about diff ratios ,what diffs will fit the series housings and can the landy handbrake be fitted to other boxes or do you have to remanufacture a new h./brake?
any input of worth is appreciated,as much as i would love to drop a thumping V8 into it , i dont want to upgrade evrything ,i may as well buy an old rangie, hmmmmmmm, theres a thought............

I have to agree.
Rangies are good value for money these days, plenty to choose from. the earlier ones now go for $2K up to $5K for a decent one. I paid $2700 for my 83 a few months back, spent plenty on it inc. the ZF conversion (now owes me $10K, but it's got nearly everything that I need).

Howdy Ferno, I went through this exercise a few months back and decided on the Holden conversion. I didn't want to chop the vehicle up any + down here at least there are a lot of conversion restrictions + the more you do the more you have to pay an engineer  . On the other hand a mate has a series 3 with a Nissan 6 diesel + 5 speed fitted, still uses original salsbury etc. and it goes very nicely 8)

Hi Ferno
Your landy diff ratios wont be too far from the ratios in your jappy. You can buy disc brake tailshaft handbrake kits.

fernockulated - I too would question the holden red motor route.
Quite a few years ago - I put a holden 161 in a series 1 (2 litre) and it seemed to go great but I was comparing it to the buggered 2 litre. Sold off the series 1 and bought a series 3 and promply seized the engine. I considered putting in a holden in it too but decided that it was cheaper to rebuild the old engine - I did that, rebuilt the dissy and the carby and put on a set of extractors - with what was a brand new engine the series 3 went really well - it performed as good a holden, was quieter, gave better fuel consumption. All up I would always recommend a good rover 2.25 over the holden 6.
So if you want to re-engine your old car - don't go holden - get something that is going to give you advantages over a good original engine.

Often wondered about a 1HD-T and four speed auto. Power of six and economy of diesel.
LR TDI and a 5 speed - like the one they are building at LVS

G'day Ferno
200/300 TDI -with or without Turbo, will bolt into existing engine mounts and will bolt to Series G/Box, it will give the extra power that the Series petrol motor lacked, that said, the Series 2.25 if tuned correctly and with the carb setup will give good power, plenty of torque without breaking to many bits (remember that they were designed to break axles before Diffs and G/boxesand Uni's) If you repower with any thing DON'T forget to UPRATE your brakes, 6cyl front brakes 3"wide and a Series 3 boosted M/cyl all Landy and no need for a Comp Plate as it was an optional extra Did you get your Carby jets sorted ? the timing for them is 6 degrees before TDC with Vacc tube OFF, the Rocket Mobile will get 100 Kph after I wind it up (Warp Speed) Iam running a 34ich webber at the moment, extractors and a 2" pipe system (big improvment).
If intrested in TDI option have a talk with Stuart at British Off Road
he will give you an idea on feasability and costs
cheers
Hey Ferno,, I reckon a 200Tdi would be the ducks nuts,
bolt straight up,
no electrickery to worry about,
reliable as all get out,
good power and economy,
and its all LR!
