    4BD1 into V8 County

    Hi

A mate of mine is looking at buying a V8 County (as they are cheep $$$) and putting a ISUZU 4BD1 (jap import) into it.

    1. Will the 4BD1 motor bolt straight upto the V8 County bell housing
    2. Will there be any need to change the diff, gearbox and t-case ratios

G'day Kelvin, mate as far as I know he would need the flywheel cover that bolts onto the back of the Isuzu engine to mate up with the G/box, you didn't state whether it was a 4sp/5sp, either way I'm sure you would need that part ? possibly available through spares?, the G/box for the V8 is the same as for the Isuzu the diff ratios are the same ? depends on what ratio he has in his T/case but they are reasonably easy to change ($$$) maybe someone else can expand on this I have a County 110 Isuzu, also have a spare engine block and head (ex-mil) in the garage as well anyway someone else may be able to expand on it cheers Dennis
PS you would have to remanufacture engine mounts too.

Diff & GBox ratios will be the same.

Possibly Tcase but not essential to get it moving again.
Just change the High range gearset in the future for not many $$$.

    G'day
Comments below are for the 4 speed:
The 4BD1 needs a special flywheel housing & flywheel, both are non ISUZU Australia but could be sourced from LR dealers. I had problems finding them for my Perentie.
The bell housing is different & I think the gear box input shaft is different. Main gearbox ratios are the same but transfer case high speed gears are different between the 110 V8 & 110 Isuzu. The Isuzu shares the same ratio as the Range Rover.
I think the engine mounts are different on the chassis.

I believe the input shaft on the gearbox is different. but I'm not sure.

The thrust bearing is definately unique, I did manage to get one through an aftermarket parts crowd. I think it was around $300 8Odollar mark from the Landrover dealer and $140 aftermarket.

    Gday all

go easy on me am a newbie, did this swap a few months ago but had the luxury of a 4bd1 in another landrover (came free with the engine :wink. Bellhousings are different, as is thrustbearing, gearbox input shafts were the same on 4 speed anyway. You will need to cut of old engine mounts v8 ones in different location and much less solid than isuzu ones. Also have noticed front bump stops extended on factory isuzu countys i have seen. Tcase ratios are different, i have higher ratios put in for the v8 and seems ok with the isuzu but have the 1:1 gearset going in soon will see what difference that makes. Radiator outlets slightly different, just swap the top and bottom outlets this way can use standard isuzu county hoses, rad cowling also different. Make sure you get a 4bd1 with power steering pump i didnt and had to source one from a wrecker as new ones were ~$800 i think, then had dramas with outlets and fittings all solvable tho.

Good luck best thing i ever did to mine i can now afford to drive it, found performance on road not much different to v8, now all i need is a hairdryer to finish it off. With the help of a friend managed to swap the isuzu out of donor landrover into mine and swap v8 from mine to donor in 4 days, wouldnt recommend it though.

    cheers

Welcome to Brisbane, thanks for your input, if we get to the stage that it is a goer it would be good to meet up so we can pick your brains on the finer points. I'm on the Northside.

Geeee you're all so friendly.................. so far

Thanks for the welcome, will go and do the intro thing. Weeds would be happy to discuss/meet to swap ideas. Am no expert but can offer opinion/advice or if you need a reference vehicle for engine mount positions etc. Living on the south side (I think) near UQ St Lucia, often on your side of town (redcliffe??) if the wind is blowing.

    Cheers
