    3D Printing of Parts

    Hi

I have been wondering about 3D printing of plastic parts.

Specifically the Speedo or Binnacle surround pretty much all of which are broken and are NLA from LR; AWR2092 is the 95-98 part number

    As far as I know it works like this;

They take a 3D scan and then fix up scan repairing it broken areas. Or we provide a mockup fix on one.

Once we have the scan they will produce on demand.

These people are one example and they specifically mention car parts

    3D Printing Studios - 3D Printing Studios Sydney | Perth | Singapore | Brisbane | Melbourne

I will email them and get a rough cost

Another candidate would be the NLA outer front door handles

The possibilities are endless. As an example Storey Wilson (RSW Solutions) produced spacers for a lift kit for his own p38.

Don't get too excited. The science department at work has one they use to make parts for model aircraft which students construct. It takes a LONG time to 3D to print a simple part.

DiscoMick, certainly the home spec printers take a long time to print but some of the high end commercial units can print at a commercially acceptable speed. It all depends on your budget and how long you are prepared to wait for a part. Size of some of the home printers is also an issue for the larger parts.

Not sure this is the right forum to attempt to organise a group manufacture of P38 parts which was my intention

Anyway I will update this thread if and when I get more info

That intent was not made clear, Steve, that's why it was mentioned and discussed in the Mods area. Group Buys go into the Markets.

I thought about putting the thread here, but decide since it was P38 specific I would put it in the P38 forum. I'm not sure it really is a group buy either.

The idea was to see if anyone else was in interested in contributing to the cost of the scan because once we have that unit production is easy.

Anyway I think I have found a good second hand one overseas, so i may not pursue this any further at this point

The prices are still way to high, in OZ anyway

"To scan this item will take 6 hours at a cost of $660 (GST incl). Then the potential printing cost will be around the $800, once i have the file I will be able to give you a better indication of price."

Probably be better in the US

I went to that link and then looked further at that companies other links on Youtube where looked at a video using that machine to make a cup cake, the finished result was not really that good a quality. There were imperfections in the out side. There are lines in the finish showing up in the viewing surface. It did not look near as good as an extruded product.
