Exclamation ID PAS Steering Box and Pump - Help please

    Hi

I hope someone can assist me.

I have a custom RR Ute and I have faced horrible steering issues - bad shaking through steering wheel at 80kph plus, OK on smooth roads until hit a bump but on gravel or poor roads - frightening and massive understeer. I found a loose pitman arm and replaced bushes, rear springs, steering dampner and more - but it gets worse. Wheels have been aligned and balanced and swapped F-R. Nothing has helped. I am now advised the problem is in the Steering box and PAS pump and both need replacing. I am unsure what they are and have added some photos and hope someone can assist in ID and also best place to acquire reco replacements!

    Thanks very much.

First pic is the standard pre 86 3 bolt PS steering box, 2nd is your brake booster which is totally unrelated to your steering problems.
I would check all the front bushes especially the panhard rod, then swivel housing pre-load.
Dont rule out rear bushes and A frame balljoint, faulty steering will omly make steering hard but not induce wobble. Have you checked the hub bearing pre-load ?

its not the pump and most likely not the box, check your steering bushes, wheel bearings, swivel pin bearing load, tie rods, drag link, panhard bushes, and in some cases the mounting bracket for the panhard rod. also check the steering shaft UJs and collapse joint if fitted

to check the box drop the drag link off the pitman arms and check it for play with the engine off..

there is a failure condition in the box that can cause the syptoms you have but its very rare.

with the drag link off and the engine at high idle have someone hold the steering wheel loosely and then belt the pitman arm with a rubber mallet. if the box goes into epeleptic conniptions the buffer spring in the DCV has failed. I've seen it once, and I didnt diagnose it, I just got the box benched in front of me for the repair with a symptom list and description of the fault.

Another possible cause. You say you've replaced bushes - does that include front shock bushes? I had an example of violent steering response because of worn bushes. When hitting bumps on tarmac there would be three or four jolts to the steering wheel, then settling until the next bump. Try pushing the front corners of your vehicle up and down and watch the shock tower for any gaps between rubber mount and metal.

Thanks Blknight for the hint on the buffer spring.

I used to have an 82 model. When I purchased it, it got bad shakes at about 80 kph.
And I mean bad. Felt like the front wheels were going to fall off.

I replaced every worn part in the front end, to no avail. I was tearing my hair out.
I spoke to Andrew Richmond and he said it would be the steering damper.

I was skeptical, thinking that most cars don't even have them.
Anyhow I was desperate so I went to a place in box hill and got a new one.
This made my problem worse. Andrew Richmond said to use a Bilstein one.

He even had a Bilstein loaner to try. So I tried it and it fixed my problem.

I know you said that you replaced yours, but with what quality?

I had this for another 12 years and never had any further front end shakes.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

    Been through similar wobbles recently.

All bushes relatively new, all Superpro.

Pitman arm not loose (for once haha).

Turned out to be really slight wear in the tie rod ends. Replaced all three. No wobbles over bumps at all now and I know the steering damper is U/S.

From much experience........ if your pitman arm was loose it will keep doing it, so keep a watch on that!

    cheers, DL
