Never heard about locking the cd for cattlegrids.

    Pat,

There is no doubt that auto transmission fluid was the recommend lubricant for the manual gearboxes and you have proven that it worked for you. But they did move onto manual transmission fluid and it was LR that recommended that we change to MTF. While you might say that your tongue is in your cheek, it is the one thing I can remember you have bagged for years. Time to move on I think.

Mate we are taking the ****.A very experienced LR mechanic I used to know set clearances in LR gearbox's and T/C's at the absolute minimum and for the first 10k he ran ATF in them, the reason was oil is too thick to lube the tight tolerances,I never drove an LT95 that could get near his for smoothness. VERY tired 12 hours full bore on the fire ground and I followed a dozer up a mountain to cut off the fire with the TD5 Defender. Man they are good off road. With a tonne on the back you would not believe where I took this truck today!!
We cut off the fire (my plan) and I hope the night guys do good checks as I literally could not go on any longer. The break is holding it just needs hourly checks.. Bed time for me though as 7am they want me again..

Im with you Pat, 335k kms on ATF, must be very lucky The 1 time, around 260ks ,that I tried "proper" gearbox oil I thought it was gonna fall apart! Rattled chronic, so I went back to dex3 and like a mouse again. For the life of me cant really know why, would have thought there be wear to allow the oil to circulate. The old mechanic I knew once said always stay with the oil you started with, regardless of brand, changing type and visc part way spells trouble for mated surfaces. I just follow that reasoning.

Same here, one of my brothers D1,340,000k's,ATF in the gearbox.
Never had a problem,oh and cattle grids, just fly over, hands on the wheel, forget the CDL.

And the D4,now where is the CDL stick for the cattle grids?
