R380 Oil Cooler

For those not familiar with the oil cooling plumbing setup on R380's, those without them have a bypass pipe of cast aluminium attached with two 8mm bolts that screw into the left side of the case. The seals are two O rings. The fitting to accommodate the pipes to and from the oil cooler also has a third bolt further forward. Almost certainly would need to clean out the mud wasp nests or whatever from the tapped thread in gearbox housing with a thread tap before bolt could be screwed in when adding oil cooler fitting.

Aussie D2s had the radiator cooler as standard.We also had a same age TD5 Defender,the lines went up to the radiator and returned to the box,there was no cooler.

The cooler I have off the unviable to restore D1 with 3.9V8 is the type like a pipe with fins around it that is located just in front of the bottom of the radiator and goes from one side to the other. Also another detail worth considering is that the fitting on the side of the gearbox which takes the pipes too and from the oil cooler has an internal circlip on the rear end holding in without checking what may be a relief or bypass valve. The fitting on R380's with no oil cooler is effectively just a pipe.

That cooler is actually the engine oil cooler from the 2.6ltre side valve six fitted in the 2a LWB from about 1967,they've got their money's worth out of it. Pat

I think you are mistaken. There were multiple of the furry pipe types.

In the series Land Rover there were 7 row, 5 row and 2 row coolers

On the Range Rover and Disco 1 there were two types

a single row for the ZF box

and a two row which were on the tf727 but I don't have an image.

The RRc and Disco auto transmission coolers went the full radiator width and the 727 one were at the bottom and top of the radiator grill aperture.

My disco and 2a both had the identical two row cooler. Pat
