    Caliper re-build

I managed to set fire to the D1 calipers I have on my camper trailer.........I'm still spitting chips about it.

Are they straight forward to rebuild??

I'm assuming there is a seal kit available??

They are still wrapped in a rag, k know the seals are buggered, haven't checked the pistons. I think I only paid $35/$40 each for them a few years ago.

Don't fully release the the hydraulic handbrake valve.....drive 20km.....seals melted, dust caps melted, grease and brake fluid onto hot rotors.

Still cannot believe I didn't feel the brakes dragging.......

Biggest prob I had doing F&R callipers on a RRC was the flimsy dust seal retainers, hard to get them home square.

I used all new pistons, seals, dust seals, retainers, split pins, Mintex pads and the little plates between the split pins and pads, all from Paddocks.

Still good from 120,000 + ago. On second set of pads.

    cheers, DL

Using a smear of rubber grease in the calliper bores and on the new pistons during assembly has been good too.

I found this the case (after ruining a few) until I cut a circle of 12mm plywood just a bit bigger than the seal retainer - using a G clamp or vise for force, the wood helps to put even pressure on the ring without slipping and it just snaps into place.

Ditto. I also used a G clamp with a piece of flat steel that fitted over the retainer to push it home squarely. Very simple apart from those retainers, which after you get 1 or 2 it becomes a lot easier. Bit of a knack to it, then you're set.
