Diesel is great but you should also consider the cost of ownership. Srvice and repairs to diesels is more expensive. At least with the V8 any engine work that needs doing on the higher milage examples WILL be considerably cheaper, and possible save you thousands of $$$'s. I manage around 450 out of my 03 V8 HSE around town and about 600k's on the highway. When you weigh up the options, and particularly if you do more highway driving, the cost of maintenance v's the cost of fuel argument is negligable.
Yes I would own a TD5 or TDV6! Am I happy with my 4ltr THOR, ABSOLUTELY! The only thing I would consider changing is by adding a long range tank, but then again the cost v's benefit doesn't add up. 150lt tank is $1700, 3 gerry cans are $90..........
If this just leaves you even more bewildered, have a chat with Graeme Cooper at Graeme Cooper Automotive and he will, as usuall, offer you some realistic impartial first-hand advise ph: 02 95502689.

God forbid I say this but - im thinking of selling my Diesel Disco - with the media trying to push Diesel prices to $ 2 per litre for christmas - driving my vehicle will not be a financial option.
Was thinking about selling her and opting for a 5 door V8 Disco 1 then with her on gas, it would be WAAAY cheaper than the diesel dog im now running.
Yes diesel has the range - but like they say unless you are crossing the desert.....
Why is it that no one bemoans the diesel prices - but when unleaded gets to the same price everyone cries poor - dont they see diesel leads the way everyone gets used to going oh **** look atthe diesel price - thank god i dont drive one, the petrochem companies arepaving the road for a piece by piece price rise.....
ok there is the soap box back

Good stuff on the conspiracy theory there, Mick!
Mind if I use it my local paper?
Today here: $1.30 for unlead. $1.40 for diesel, but the bloke in Byron Bay sells fish'n'chips bio-d for $1.27/litre. Our best price here on Coles discount is $1.25 for unlead, but an indeendent sells without any discount stuff for $1.26; go figure.....

I had a magic docket yesterday...
Paid $1.14.9 per litre for diesel https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Oh how relieved I was
And even with the thristy program in 'Lara' towing a 1.7 ton trailer into a head wind on the way back to Whyalla only used 16l/100km...
More than happy, with the new program I'm loading to the ECU that should drop closer to 12l/100km with trailer.
Cheers

With the drop in value of V8's you should be able to convert to lpg and still be ahead. As someone previously said, if a diesel goes wrong its lots of $$$$. Timing belt replacement has also been mentioned.
As a general statement, high mileage landrover diesels (200k +) are a more risky proposition than high mileage V8's (300k+). While the diesels do a good job, they work hard to do it because of their small capacity.
