At first look i thought it was a roller from a bearing. Closer look reminds me of a roller from a rocker arm.
Is it hardened?
Did you remove sump at all on the box or engine.
It might be spacer/ dowel.

I removed the sump from the auto when I changed the filter but I emptied the drain pan after that.

Sorry, should have worded that different. I emptied the drain pan after doing the auto and didn't notice anything in there. I then did the transfer and diffs and it was in there after that. Pretty sure the drain hole for the transfer would be too small for it to fit through. Car was driving fine before this. Maybe it's fallen in there from somewhere else. I'll find out when I finish working on it and take it for a drive.

I reckon its a foreign object, too big to be any kind of bolt spacer that would fit thru a drain hole.
Its too thick to be a dowel and doesnt have a split in it, they are more like a roll pin.
