vibration on series 1 discovery

My Series One Disco history of a similar problem went like this:
Front wheel vibration, wandered a bit.
Change tyres, no better,
Fitted alloy wheels, no better,
Fitted new steering damper, no better,
Took it to a dealer, (off road nut), he replaced the shims on the swivel ball ends, (the big ones), set up the preload as per the book, problem solved.
He was from Perth and was working in Kalgoorlie at the time.
He also knew the car and gave me this story. If you tow using load equalising bars, (LR say "not to do"), you load up the front steering components. This car had a towing history in Perth. Any how he got all my business after that. The tyre marts etc, just had no idea.

Disconnect the tie rod and move the hub by hand. (no wheel fitted). It should be firm to move. ie not easy or loose. There is a spec in the book, using a spring balance off the hub steering arm to set the preload. I cannot recall the figure, but have LR check it out.

Ok i have had this on a couple of my trucks over the years
Main thing is it will start with out notice. When you hit something little as a joint in the tarmac
We call it death wobble. And belive me when it starts doing it at 140Kph, that is a really good term for it. The whole front of the truck feels like it is bounching up and down and sounds and feels like you have just ran over the front axel

It is a combination of the Steering damper, panard rod bush and the front hockey sticks bushes

If it started after you went off roading , then thay may have been worn but off roading help them along to be nackered

I'm experiancing similar problems on my S1 disco with a nasty vibration which kicks in pretty bad at 40, then 60, then not so bad at 80 and not at all at 100 and seems to be eminating from the centre of the vehicle.
I have checked the tailshafts and UJ's numerous times,rebuilt the front axle with all new bearings and reset swivel bearing preload,new steel wheels, tyres (fitted, balanced and aligned by Bob Jane!),2 steering dampers and front radius arms bushes (axle end only).

Any ideas ??

sorry for taking so long to reply, the car has been in for gas and then i have been just lazy for not looking at it earlier. i also feel a bit stupid for what the vibration was, i started the other night by going to check whether i had lost any balance weights, to do this i had to remove those chrome covers around the edge of the rims, low and behold the last one i took off was the front passenger side which was accompanied by being half full of dried mud, hence the balance like problem at 80-100kph. the slow speed problem is now still there but i think this might now be a disc needing machined as i have drove the car with the vibration for a few weeks now and it started just after i went playing in the mud. moral of the story is firstly chuck those silly chrome things in the bin (or keep them to make it look a bit nicer when you come to sell the car). secondly, wash the car properly and make sure no lumps off crap are left behind, i have bought a pressure washer to do this now rather than piling money into the laser wash place. and thirdly, i shouldn't be such a lazy are when i know something needs looking at.

Ross - dont worry, at least there is a string now about disco 1 vibrations - which are a very common issue, as for your disk machining, this would generally cause you vibration pretty much only when braking, or when slowing under brakes,

vibration whilst driving could be any other things already listed, or something totally new...

dont worry about the speed you are doing......
tell me what revs the engine is doing each time this happens....
and also if it is manual or auto.....


it sounds to me like it might be engine related....
crankshaft pulley or flywheel....

engine speed is staying fairly constant, no surging or revs dropping, and it is an auto.

does the vibration come in at the same engine revs each time....?
irrespective of what gear its in...?

:cool: well, i had the same symptoms and the fix, after all the looking at tyres, alignment, balancing,bearings and everything else was
solved by mr pedder - just fit a big arsed steering damper.

it comes in at approx 15kph and stays all the way until i stop, it is worst when i am braking to a stop but is still slightly there when i am crawing in traffic also. you can see the front end of the car sway from side to side by approx. an inch when it is doing it. it may be bushes or discs, it is in getting the mirrors looked at then i will get on to this.

ps i scratched the door the other day, so i went around every car shop for a touch up pot for savarin white. no where stocks an equivalent colour so i had to go to the land rover dealer in perth and pay $28 for that colour.
