    Post 97 is what matters

I think they sorted most issues by then

with 98 and 99 being the best buys.

The old man has a 98 4.0 model and bar some EAS issues (rectified with some new air bags) it's been a trouble free run. dad has owned it for about a year now (got it Aug 04) for a good price at the time of $21.5K.

The 4.0 is a good engine, not a 4.6 performancewise but still no slouch if you get stuck into it, plus they have no engine block liner issues (mainly on earlier ones). The XA series are my pick if I was to buy one (99 on) as they seem to be the most trouble-free models.

Good luck, great vehicle just watch for a lemon that's all.
