SALS diff flange repair

I am going to order a flange kit From Karcraft which includes flange, seal, mudshield etc. ($155). As this is not covered in my work shop manual i dont know if i will be able to install these items with my very basic tool kit.
Can anyone shed some light?

Is this a pinion flange?

if so, and you're replacing it because the seal surface of the flange is buggered, you can get a speedy sleeve fitted for $30 at a good auto engineering shop, and a seal for around $20 from FWD Motors etc.

Fitting needs a big spanner and some smaller spanners, and a screw driver maybe.

Dunno about the mudshield though.

Then yes, order the seal ( just checked cos I need one and FWD Motors have them for $7.48 ) and line up a work shop to do a speedie sleeve just incase the surface is stuffed.

You can replace the outer bearing if its stuffed but the inner one ( AFAIK) needs the diff center removed to get at it - thats a job for a diff shop.

If the pinion is simply a bit loose, then replace the seal and re-tighten the nut flange nut till the movement just disappears.

Manuals for this are online somewhere

I've done it three times on my Defender at the pinion, front once & rear twice, but did not sleeve. My mate in Orange set up pinion in drill press and a little light emery smoothed out the groove, has travelled 15,000km still no leak, acted like a little lathe just held doubled over strip of canvas emery, didn't take long to smooth again and not enough taken of for a releak issue. If no drill press put drill in vice at low speed. 8)

Make sure you buy genuine Land Rover (green oval bag) seal. I have used non brand seal from Karcraft and it had to be replaced about 5000km later (actualy less) & groove then not a problem. Only rear pinion was grooved, I guess able to let mud and grit in that end easier than front.

Big holding pinion locknut about 148lb tension from memory.

If it goes again I will get a sleave. If only minor groove found emery paper, its not hard, just a little patience to do a good job.

Cheers
Bryce
