TD5 Turbo Boost Settings

Just don't let it get to high. A few years back a mate of mine bought a celica that needed work. He bought a turbo I had that had been rebuilt and fitted it with a new head gasget and booked the car in for a service, clearly stating that he had fitted a new turbo and didn't know what the wast gate was set to so please check before running the engine. The workshop tunned the car and took it for a drive. 30psi of boost blew the cilinder through the bottom of the engine. :evil: :evil:
It was quite a fight with the garage over who was responsable.

Lovely! Tomorrow it is just a boost pressure check. I have spent a lot of money and time getting problems in this Defender fixed and it is now close to being a vehicle I can be confident in. The remaining problem (well there are a couple but they can be fixed in my own good time) is that there is a distinct lack of power and I am hoping that it is the turbo. Well maybe not hoping as it will mean more money if it is but on the other hand I have run out of ideas if it is not...

Anyway at least I am past the point I was at a couple of weeks back where i was trying to find a way to get rid of it but not sell it privately as I did not want to burden another owner with the problems I had. now if everything keeps going as it has been lately I am keen to keep it for some years.

Just be careful on what the boost pressure is telling you.
You could have the correct boost pressure with a partially plugged intercooler starving the engine, or conversely a low boost pressure due to a leaking intercooler or pipe work. Depends where the boost pressure is taken from. Most will tee in at the waste gate actuator somewhere.
Make sure the air flow circuit to the engine is in good shape with no leaks.
Put in a new air filter for the tests.
