I am grappling with the pesky crack next to the steering box on the driver side, I was wondering if anyone had one of the plates mentioned on this thread fitted to their D2 and if so if they could share photos of how it sits? I can't track one down so may look at having one made by a boilermaker friend.

Also if anyone has had a go at welding the crack themselves, did you have to take out the steering box or could I get away with removing the radiator and hoses only? The crack on mine hasn't spread to the top yet but goes all the way up on the passenger side...

The second photo definitely looks like it has ben done before, cracking in the usual place, just on the edge of a previous repair (the edge of the heat affected zone) I would guess the box will need removing to get around the area to repair correctly. I will have to check mine when I get home, clocked 330,000 now and is currently off the road with trans issues

    cheers

Has anyone had any luck in sourcing the LR mod section?

A few months ago, I helped member Leo with his cracking chassis issue. I remember we looked high and low for a quick and easy way to do it, as he has welding capable mates who could have done it.
But zero luck in finding off the shelf parts to do it.
In the end, we took his D2 to a body shop in Glen Iris who specialised in doing this work(for ULR back in the day), and he fabbed up the bracketing, much more substantial than the image you posted. Leo and myself just stripped and rebuilt it, in his shop, guru did the bracketing/welding. Considering that he didn't have the parts in stock either(and he had quite a lot of old D2 bits out the back too) .. I'd say supply of the bracketing would be all done and dusted.

Out of curiosity, I checked my D2s(I have two others in addition to the TD5). One spares shell, this had been done at some point, and the other one is the 'future project'(has been for a long time too) .. but it hasn't been done. Both have near on 200K klms on them, and the hulk is a '99, and the project is a '00 .. so very close in age. Weird at how random the issue seems to have been. I checked the TD5 too('02-03 model) ... and it's fine.

    I know that panel shop.

That bracket I posted was the Land Rover designed fix for the crack. I guess when they did it the cracks were not 23 years and 340,000 km old....

I could make a template from it if you like. Easy to do.
    It’s only a single fold

That'd be great Mike. I'd like to get someting made up before I pull the steering box out

    P6 V8s had a similar problem.
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.
