I used to think that way.. now I'm not so sure. We had a run up here the other day, and a adm333 with the petrol rangie user 24.5l/100km. Same run in the defender and I used 10.5 l/100km. So gas has to be well less than half the price to be ahead.

Consider as well that you also have to recover your conversion cost. also, big LPG tanks are heavy, which is not a good thing... and how do you feed this thing on your desert trip?

Hi stony, my RR gets around 9.1 / 100km on a trip and 10.5 around town but I have to have it serviced every 10,000 km.

For some strange reason diesel fuel is about the same as petrol.

Taking that into account I would still go with the V8.

For a starter diesel engines although lasting longer, they require far more servicing to keep them in top nick and even if fuel keeps going up, it depends on how many kms per year you are planning to do.

If you do around 20,000 a year you will save about $1250 a year not including service costs so you will save under $1,000 if you get a diesel and it will take you 5 to 7 years to break even.

How long do you think you will keep the new vehicle.

And this is without the added cost of gas conversion, in my opinion not worth the cost, just go with the V8.

thanks drivesafe....I'm in the market for a 00/01 Td5 or slightly later V8 if the figures work out okay. I'll be keeping it around 5 yrs, doing around 15-20k per year. Once I considered LPG but no more. More research at my mechanic/LR dealer I think but I feel the V8 might be the go.
