Hi Pat,

Thanks for the advice. All the coolant hoses (incl. heater and small bore hoses) were replaced when I fitted the Turner head. And I used lots of spiral wrap wherever things might rub together.

I'm due to do the tappets shortly and, having encountered a set of aftermarket 'Alfoil' lash caps that wore through in 30K km a few years ago, I always look closely at the caps to see how they are going.

I bought a new injector spill line set from the UK a few years ago as the original was getting on in years, so I can fit that if needed.

What is that stiff plastic (nylon?) tubing used for the compensator line and the original fuel lines called, please? So I know what to ask for.

Lastly, I didn't know I had a charcoal canister.:confused: Aren't they only on petrol models?

When I went to my spare hose bag, I found I had a new turbo elbow hose, a used but OK manifold hose and two of the short pipe to intercooler hoses, so it seems this one was well out of step and a lot older than the others. I'll slap myself on the wrist shortly.:(

I should have asked whether mere mortal LR owners had seen this before, not professional seen-it-all spanner wielders.:p When you've seen this before, has is caused a noise like a bad air leak?

Ian,on the side of the head,left side as your looking at the motor you'll see a black plastic cylinder bolted to the rocker cover with a drain line to the sump,thats the charcoal canister,they coke up over time and the drain line goes hard from the heat and splits,usually with a big cloud of smoke that'll have you swearing the engines on fire. Pat

Pat, that "black plastic cylinder" does not contain charcoal, It is a cyclone to seperate oil vapours and oil, the vapour goes into the inlet pipe from the aircleaner to turbo, and the oil drains back to the sump. Its basically a mini provent.. our 300TDi's were fitted long before they have become a fashion thingy :) They do need rinsing out now and then but.

Ah, I'm with you now Pat. Tho' I agree with Scott that it's a cyclone separator. Yes, I replaced the drain line to the sump just a few years ago as the original was looking a bit ratty.

The vent port hasn't gone back to the turbo inlet for over a decade - that's why my intercooler was quite clean. I have a 3/4" hose going to a second 'home brewed' cyclone separator over on the driver's side mudguard panel - a modified pneumatic filter/separator. Then the 'twice cycloned' vapour goes via another long hose to 'rust proof' the insides of the chassis members.

Charcoal canister is just a generic term used before PCV-Provent style seperators came into being. Pat

No idea,I've never even seen it for sale as a replacement part,saying that there's no reason normal fuel hose cannot be used. Pat
