Gasket sealant in diff, what to do?

    Greetings All,

I have just spent the better part of this afternoon removing some Gasket Sealant from my rear diff casing (Salisbury diff in a 300tdi 110).

In doing so there are lots of bits of the blue Gasket Sealant that have fallen on to the crown and pinion wheels in the diff.

Is this something I should be concerned about cleaning before putting the diff cover back on and refilling her?

yep, get all that loose stuff out.

I've never heard a decent mechanic say with no sarcasm "no dont worry about leaving things in housings that can clog bearings and gallaries, I cant think of any bad that could happen when oil flow gets interupted or something picks up small bits of metal and carry them into the faces of finely toleranced bearings or gear faces."

I recall pulling down a FIAT twin cam that had run a big end. This engine had been rebuilt by someone not that long before. He had used plastigague to measure the bearing clearances, and had not been thorough in his clean up. Guess what the gallery in the crank was blocked with. Foreign material should not be welcome.
