Suspension mods, Disco S1

I am looking at lifting the suspension on my V8 series 1 disco. it has a body lift on it of approx 1.5" and upgraded shocks (this is how i bought the car) but now i want a bit more ground clearance and will get the springs replaced with a set to lift it, my main question is what are the better springs to go for?
I have been quoted $90 each for king springs from Repco, and Ape springs are $500 fitted for the 4. is it worth paying the $140 to have them fitted or should i do them myself? any special tools?
I know i may need longer travel shocks, but have been told that the shocks on it now look as though they should be okay so i will wait and see first.

I was also playing with the idea of 33" tyres but have been warned that axles & diffs suffer when this is done especially with mud terrains. the tyres on now are just cheapies and don't grip to well in the soft stuff and are a bit noisy. so i may just get a set of 31" muds if the 33" are not a good option.

other than that has anyone got any good ideas for improving the disco's without spending mega money?

thanks

Hi Ross,

These are "meaning of life " questions  and you will get a plethora of responses as you touch on many issues.

At the risk of sounding like my "ex" I will answer your questions with a question.

What sort of driving do you do or want to do?

Hi Ross, I posted a similar question a while ago, and have decided to try out a set of King Springs which i can get second hand from another forum member, simply because of my budget at the moment, and I want the extra cash for Bilstein Shocks. If i had the cash i would be getting springs from Rangie Spares in Melbourne, if you tell them what you have on the vehicle, what you use it for etc, they will tailor the springs to suit, if you arent happy with them you have 3 weeks to get them back and exchange them for something better suited to your needs, you can do this as many times as you like until you find a set up that suits you. As for shock absorbers, the only ones to use are Bilsteins, probably the best budget option, but still very good are the Old Man Emu Nitrocharger shocks. As for tools, spring compressors are handy but not necessary, other than that just basic tools are all that is needed, to my knowledge. Hope this helps. matt

the main type of off road driving i do is in the bush & sand. however i have been doing a lot of mud since i got this car and i have been struggling at little when it gets very soft and in other wheel tracks, hence why i would like bigger tyres &/or mud terrains

Just put Kings in my D1, atl est 2' all round, very happy,
front shocks OEM, not long enough,
fronts still in, it just stops the front droping as much as it can.
getting lower spring towers for the front.
put lower rear shock mount in for the rear shocks.

Has anybody here changed the springs themselves in the front of a Disco 1? When I had mine done the suspension place winged they had trouble doing them and it took them a lot longer than they expected. At one stage they had it on a hoist with a forklift lifting the front end.

Do ALL my own work,
front springs just put a bottle jack between the axle house and chassie,
to get the old ones out and put new longer ones in, didn't even need to use my spring compreser.
worked for mine last month and a friends about 2 yr a go.

That sounds like a good idea, i did mine a couple months ago and just used the spring compressor's, never again

When you where doing it, did u have the axle sitting on a decent axle stand or something else, and then just put the bottle jack between the axle and chassis ? The bottle jack was that just the standard land rover one ? and what lift did u put in ?

Thanks
Matt.

How I put my Springs in (+2')
Body on Stands, wheels off, axle hanging by leading arms,
Shocks undone from the bottem
brake lines off (replaced by longer ones)
Bottle jack (LR one will do) Placed on Panhard Rod mount (left or Right) which lines up with the chassis
moves axle away from the vehicle, to give room to remove the springs
