Fuel usage after 300tdi tuneup

Hi All

When I decided to have the fuel pump retimed on my defender I thought I should get an indication of my fuel usage. I have had the defender for 10 months or so and have not recorded any usage. After doing quick sums at the bowser I always figured it was between 9 - 10km/litre

So a few weeks out from the job being done I recorded the following;

90L - 830km - 9.22km/L City/Hi-way
47L - 394km - 8.38km/L City/Hi-way/Offroad (Mt Mee)

After the tuneup;

72L - 693km - 9.63km/L City/Hi-way

I'm heading across the simpson on Sat for three weeks and will record all fuel usage which I will post.

How much of an increase in black smoke has there been?

Thanks for posting this information. I have been brooding about this for some time. In spite of all the posts by knowledgable people recommending this I am fighting my innate conservatism in these things. The black smoke comments have put me off.

I need to get my fuel system seen to in the holidays, i am going to take it to the Injector specialist in Katoomba in the first week, it is blowing way to much smoke, and appears to be over fueling, compared to when i bought it, the fuel consumption is appauling. Matt

I have not followed the defender while somebody else is driving however looking in the rear vision mirror, cruising along there appears to be no smoke however under under load when you first put your foot down quite a large puff black smoke than the smoke reduces.

It's a little more than I expected, so long as i don't get pulled over by the dept of transport.

At this early stage it has not effected fuel usage, big improvement exceleration torque etc, much better to drive. I must put my infra red temp gauge to see if its running cooler which was one of the benifits.

While I was packing last night I thought I would run my finger down the body work above the exhaust expecting my finger to be black, no residue at the moment, well after 700km.

I get between 6 and 7 L/100km all the time and don't have any black smoke and can beat a TD5 or TDI on the road anytime - in the bush is a different matter.

Good to hear it's going well, Kelvin.

I know you've got the fuel usage calculated, but for what ti's worth, on our Simpson trip our Defender used around 20l/100k. That was virtually identical to a 300tdi rangie with a tricked pump. That was including 2 days on the french line, and the other 7 off road, one shotlines and sometimes completely cross country.

The nearest car in consumption was a diesel prado that used half again, and the petrol rangies used closer to 2.5x that 8O

Hi Ace
Do you use any fuel treatments? If not have a look at some of the better known products.I would try it for a month or so and see if there is an improvement.A visit to a diesel shop is a good way to burn a pile of cash.
