As to whether I can put bio in my td5, is a question that probably has to be answered by landrover itsself. My main concern is that being a new car , if something goes wrong could it void the warranty????

For those of you who are in Sydney I am pleased to announce that we have established a new Sydney Biodiesel Users Group.

We had our second meeting on the Wednesday of this week just passed with a BBQ, a few beers, an inspection of a portable biodiesel reactor built into a pretty funky (but very expensive) enclosed box trailer at my work - the University of New South Wales.

Of extra value and even greater excitement was a talk to those assembled by Adrian Lake representing the commercial biodiesel plant on the NSW Central Coast.

We were all very happy to hear that within a couple of weeks Ferrys on Sydney Harbour will be running on biodiesel as a cleaner, more environmentally friendly fuel - particularly because this means for us that we also will be able to purchase biodiesel from a bowser in Sydney!

While having my fuel injector pump rebuilt recently, I asked the guys about using biodiesel in my 300TDi. They were very negative and pulled out a Bosch Tech Note that indicated that biodiesel was not recommended for my pump - I was told that my 20000km warranty on the reconditioned pump would be void if I used it.

On the other hand I am aware of someone using biodiesel in a 300TDi powered defender for 2-3 years without problem.

What about mixing it with conventional diesel like 60/40 mix?
I have been adding Acetone to my weekly fill for 6 months with no ill effects but some positive ones, I gain and extra 100ks to a tank and no puff of black smoke on start up or any visible underload..
I would'nt mind trying BD just out of morbid curiosity..

Does anyone know if the BioDiesel service station at Hexam just north of Newcastle still exists.

Also - while the car will run fine on 100% biodiesel - will a diesel run on a mixture of diesel and properly filtered cooking oil (not biodiesel). I understand that some low tech diesels will actually run on 100% cooking oil - when I use the term cooking oil I am not talking about BioDiesel.

diesel engines were originally designed and exhibited running on pure vegetable oil.

There are people who do run their diesels on veggie oil (called Straight Vegetable Oil or SVO), however, this usually requires some level of modification i.e. heating of the oil, dual tanks, switching from diesel or biodiesel for starting up, etc.. for me, this is too much effort so I go for biodiesel..

you can mix biodiesel with dino-diesel in any ratio you like.. for example, yesterday I was a little too far from *my* fuel station, so I had to put some dino-diesel to get me home.. where I could refuel (one down side of homebrew - you only have 1 fuel station) with biodiesel...

I have a 300tdi in my 1998 defender 130 and I have been running mainly on biodiesel for around 50,000km.

Sometimes I have to use dinodiesel if I run out or I am on a long trip and my 130 litre tank can't get me there and home. I just add the dinodiesel in - no probs. I prefer to not use the dino if I can avoid it but it isn't a problem.
