    Timing cover breather?

I was looking for something on ebay and came across this:

Defender Discovery 1 RRC 300TDI Timing Cover Breather Plate GWYNLEWIS4X4 | eBay

Is there a valid reason for one of these, or is it someone after a quick buck?

    lol. That's amazing.

    Don't buy it.

    1. There is a hole in the bottom of the cover already. It's advisable to plug if wading.
    2. If you plug it I don't know why you need a breather... What inside there needs to breathe exactly?

Any mechanical environment could produce pressure so i suppose its not a bad idea, saves remembering to put the wading plug in not that i have ever done it.
Easy enough to do yourself if you are so inclined.

I wasn't planning to. Seemed a bit superfluous to me. If anything, I would have thought the thing would be pressurised, not the other way round.

I suppose so, but I'm like you. Just leave the wading plug out and drive!

    The description states

"one of these must be fitted to the timing cover if you have fitted a wading plug, if you go into water without one the inside of the timing cover will cause a vacuum and suck water and mud in past the crank pulley seal, this wont do the cambelt and timing gears much good if you dont fit one."

Seems to me that it would need a serious vacuum to achieve that.

Isn't it backwards anyway? If there becomes a vacuum in the timing cover it would suck oil out of the crank seal?

Cancel that. I see now. The seal in the timing cover obviously.

Yeah. I reckon this guy is trading on the fear of what happens if you go into a bog hole with the wading plug out.
