I did a trip of around 8000k (Simpson Crossing) a few years back and returned around 10.7 litres/100 fully loaded with a roofrack.
This is for a manual Defender so allowing for the auto to be a bit worse I would say things are OK.

Hi all
There has been a few threads on this topic lately - so here's another.
On a recent trip of a few thousand loaded up, roof racked kilometres my 300tdi auto used an average of 11.1 litres/100km. The best it returned was close to 10 (flat country 100kmh) and the worst 11.5. Does this sound reasonable to people - the worst leg was the Hume hwy between Albury and Sydney just trying to keep up with the traffic up those hills! I had hoped to get better than this :?:
Do people think that me running 215/85's would effect fuel consumption much - they are equivalent to a 31 inch. :?:
Interested to hear what other tdi owners get when loaded up and touring?
cheers
Lindsay

I've just bought a Defender 130 manual with full length roof rack and loaded with tools and my first tank worked out to be 11.7 per 100 on mainly country runs and really bad head winds so its seems fairly average

ANY V8 DISCO OWNER WOULD LOVE THOSE FIGURES AT THE MOMENT

How about 7.8lt/100km on my regular run to work
...well up until recently anyway - when I discovered the idiots who did the recon on the engine shorted the starter motor terminals with my turbo waste gate actuator during the install. The result was a 5mm diameter hole blown in the actuator body and not much boost until high RPM when the boost went thru the roof (actuator wasnt openning waste gate).
After I fixed that I'm now getting mid 8's to 9lt/100km

Thats brilliant economy :!: Are you running a standard setup-is it a 200 or 300tdi? Do you have any tips? What do you get on a loaded up trip?

Your fuel figures are about right for a s1 disco - I have one with 31 inch
tyres, manual Tdi with 260k's on the clock. It gets 11.4 l/100k (metro), and I push it a little. I had a talk with a diesel reconditoner, and as the injection set up ages, it loses economy a little. Reconditioning the injectors so they spray at the highest pressures and resetting the injector pump so it delivers the right amount of fuel at the right time will get you below the 10 mark. On the bit about highway use, I notice that too - but here's somthing: At 90k, I'm using 5 lbs of boost, and about 2000 revs. To get to 110k, I'm at 2750 revs and max boost. I put it down to diesels being happier at low revs. Less boost = less fuel.
Still heaps better than my old Rangie V8. I miss it but I hate to think what I'd spending on fuel with it.

My 300TDi/R380 combo on my 90RR gives about 9.5-10.5 ltrs/100km in my normal weekly running but is a bit worse when loaded up and pushing the air at faster speeds (ie. 100-120km/hr)
I think the biggest contributor is my work run which is 130km per day spending about 80% of that distance at 90-95km/hr. Other than that, I've got the turbo compensator diaphram on max and another 60degrees on the max fuel screw (ie increased fuelling). Together with alloy wheels and light road-based 235x70 tyres (BFG AT's go on for the fun stuff) all means I get up to speed pretty quickly (...OK - as far as Tdi's go that is). The EGT guage also helps by showing if I'm in too high a gear and wasting fuel. It's a manual 300Tdi which was rebuilt twice 40,000km ago (dont ask!). Also - it seems I'm getting over the increase in boost as my last tank was 8.2lt/100km. I find that if I want to keep up with the motorised shopping trolleys off the lights I can but it means letting her gently wind-out to around 4,500rpm gear changes. This goes thru more juice. I normal take off a little slower with gear changes around 3,000rpm. Travelling at 110km/hr goes thru about 20% more.

It sounds fairly good. I get 11.4 out of my TD5 but I do 90 in the 100 zones and 100 in the 110 zones.
