Setting TD5 cam timing (On an engine stand)

    Hello all,

Well this one has got me a bit stumped - to do it correctly.

I know how absolute critical it is to get the TD5 cam timing exactly spot on.

Now in a vehicle its easy, you remove the pin in the bell housing, insert the crank stop pin and then insert the cam stop pin in the head.

That locks both in place for you to insert and do up the chain tensioner.

However, what about on an engine stand? i get my head back this week, will put it all on and then comes cam timing. I have the correct pin to lock the cam in place but how do i ensure the crank is locked and is true at TDC when the tensioner is inserted.

As to me when the tensioner is inserted and takes up slack of the chain, it will pull the crank around with it. No ideal and very bad - not correct timing.

I could simply leave the rocker cover on loose and not insert the cam plug until i've done the timing in the car, but its so much easier and nicer to do it on the engine stand. If possible.

I've scoured through the interwebs and found nothing as yet, just what appears to be people think they are doing it correctly but in fact its probably not.

    Cheers, Dan.

when you put the chain on the crank pulls the chain around from the cam, when the chain is on all the slop should be on the side of the tensioner, when you release the tensioner it should self center up on the slop.

theres a few options for TDCing the crank, my favorite is with a stop bolt inserted through #1 glow plug hole and then using a cam degree wheel on the crank/flywheel to establish TDC.
