General Fuel Economy (since I keep getting asked, first post is my disco)

on 25th March at about 0930 with the weather app showing 30 deg c the live temp indicator on the phone showing 30 degrees and on a nice longish flatish bit of NT highway heading north....

With a tdi300 disco in http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...ng-tdi-d1.html this configuration with say 250KG worth of tools, water, driver, luggage and whatever else on board full to the brim -~85Km of fuel in all tanks, solar panel on the roof level with the roof step and both side awnings in pla

with the GPS on 105, the speedo on 110, no wind, everything warmed up the boost gauge said 6 and the EGT's said 450. By 1130ish it was up at 470 for the same sort of flat road.

Overall with ~300km from my place to darwin + near enough to 100K in darwin maintaining a comfortable cruise letting the boost climb on the hills and maintaining EGT to no higher than 580, maintaining 6 psi on over run (upto 130 km) then holding whatever speed I could with 450 deg EGT and ignoring the boost gauge. Fairly normal city driving.

that burns up 38L of fuel for just under 400K on the odo.

Overall with ~300km from my place to darwin + near enough to 100K in darwin maintaining a comfortable cruise letting the boost climb on the hills and maintaining EGT to 580 or lower then backing off, maintaining 6 psi for over run (upto 130 km) then holding whatever speed I could with 450 deg EGT and ignoring the boost gauge. Fairly normal city driving.

that burns up 38L of fuel for just under 400K on the odo.
So, 10.5 l/100k. Not bad, but not as good as my TD5 with 4 adults, a bloody big dog and luggage. Exactly 70 litres for 700 k
No gauges, so no idea of boost or EGT. Chipped engine, auto, cruise set at around 105, but much cooler ambient.

Didn't do so well doing this though:

when I dont push it around for a 105 sustained cruise it does better, roughly its worth about 1l/100k for every 5 degrees and if I dont push to hold speed after it over runs I pick up a little more as well, the 300K only took me ~2:45 to get nailed so my average speed was nearer to 110

    The last TD5 D2a i had did over 1000k out of a tank,once.
That was on a trip from here to Townsville, two people, one bag each,so no real weight at all.

On another return trip from the Cape,we were half loaded, stuck behind grey nomads, travelling around 75 to 85 km/hr,for over 400k.Fuel usage was around 8.9l/100.

The vehicle had a power upgrade, done by Bruce Davis.Didnt have anything on the roof.

In fact, overall, the D2 was better on fuel than the D4.

Funny, the D1 is better on fuel around town, but it seriously lacks the performance of the D2, but on the highway the D2 kills it. They are very different cars however.

I run LPG on my Tdi,sitting on 110 with gas the EGT's are 410-430 with an extra 45nm of torque, doing it without gas the EGT's are 470^ without 45nm of torque. Pat

My 300TDI 130 used to average 10l/100km now with turbo upgrade it averages 12l/100km . I do tend to drive it a bit harder now though .

    Hi Johntins,
    I think you've made a blue there.
If you burn 38 litres to cover 400 km, that is 9.5 litres/100 km (38/4).
Another way of looking at it is: 10.5 km per litre (400/38).
    Pretty good.
    Cheers, AndrewMilne

    Still driving Miss Daisy

Three Disco Family now, between the two of us.

'Daisy' is still edging toward the Magic 600,000 Kilometre and does a constant 10.5 Lts / 100 Klms, as it is a 300TDi Auto' .
The worst thing about 'Daisy' it's only done 2 Ltrs of paint / 600,000 Klm's, with the 'Clearcoat' showing it's not up to the Ultraviolet rays from the Tasmanian Sunshine.

Then there is 'Fred' 300TDI Man', lagging behind 'Daisy' by half at 309,000 Kilometres, constantly does better than 10 Lts / 100 Klms, The paint consumption is worse by twice with the Clearcoat leaving the surface in flakes.

The third 300TDi Auto' Discovery is a newcomer and has pristine Black exterior and interior. It came to our place in a sorry state, with lots of Discovery problems, the list?

To be checked for a cracked head or at least replacement of a blown head gasket as it is spewing it's coolant.
The Air conditioner has been broken fora while with the wiring to the magnetic clutch torn out, a fairly simple repair made interesting by the multivee pulley's circlip recess having parted company with the bearing support.
Electric window winders with broken rollers, Door lock actuators brunt out, Flat battery helped to it's demise by a constantly running device for a external battery charge circuit.

No idea of what the fuel consumption of this 'Black Beauty' will be, other than when I bucked up enough courage to take it for a test drive, I was impressed with the amount of power it displayed, I think the fuel pump has been tweaked. So with more power with most likely the Injector pump being fiddled with, will that mean higher fuel consumption?

That is only three of my collection of Land Rovers which must number over a couple of dozen now, so I will spare you from the sordid details of the others as I don't want to bore you all to the point of going to read a LRO magazine.

    D1 V8.

Bad on highway and horrible in city driving.
Beyond that i shudder at the thought of the actual figures my car gets.
Lets just say im on a first name basis with most local servos..

300kms on a big gas tank... 70 ltrs or something. HORRIBLE.
    Sounds good though.......
