The pinion seals on Black Betty are a tad leaky,not drippy but are wet.I have bought a pair of genuine seals today to replace.
If I dont get them fitted before any off-roading are the diffs likely to suck water back thru the seals if submerged in water????

No need to worry, pretty common problem. No more will get into diff when submerging any other time if not wet. It is good practice, if practicle to lets things cool down on deep water crossings.

After dozens/hundreds of creek/river crossings and checking diff oil only the odd discolouration has ever been noticed in diff oil and not every time. My last trip out hung up in creek crossing for near an hour while recovery took place checked oil today no water at all.



I'm up in the air in this shot but when stopped trying to drive out settled level in the creek hung up on a boulder, I was backing up (long story).

If you decide to change the seal anyway make sure there is no groove on the flange from wear off the old seal.

Just a thought, don't know how effective in practice but wonder what silicone lube gel would be like on the seal. Seem to use it on pool stuff for water sealing, maybe a smear of that before reassembly may help. ???
