    3.5efi dropping cylinders!!!!

    ive got a problem, im loosing 1 cylinder every now and then??
    the first sign of any trouble was 3weeks ago, on my trip back from
    the watagans i got to redbacks place turned DW off for 1min
    and then she wouldnt start! plenty of fuel pressure, just no go!
    i left it for 30min and first go she went!
    now! yesterday morn 3min into the trip to work DW starts to run sick
    at idle, slight touch of the throttle all ok! i get over the intersection nothing
    in front i give her a boot and manual shift the auto to 3rd. all fine till i get
    1k down the road rough again? pull up at work idle is fine???

    and it did it again today! its dropping 1 cylinder! i changed the plugs! old ones look fine. i do how ever have a noisy rocker!

    so who has what ideas???

    Really Discowhite it could be anything.
    You have a 14 CUX if its the Disco you are talking about and they are very reliable.

    1 dirt /water in fuel . Maybe whack a bit of metho in the tank.
    2 plug lead/rotor/ dizzy cap- replace
    3 TPS- test with multimeter
    4 Haven't got a K&N I hope. If so clean MAF and ditch K&N

    yep its 14cux.
    1. just cleaned tank, new filter and had injector off car cleaned 1500k's ago.
    2 plug leads are new so is the rotor and cap. roving mech services installed a new ign module(back on the dizzy) 6 months ago.
    after all that it was the coil/base plate thingy in the dizzy that died!
    now new.
    3 i'll test at work tomorra!
    4 std paper element new after all the dust from watagans 3 weeks ago.

    it all started after all that dust, it was really thick. you can see dust marks on the inside of the intake tubing after the MAF meter. not good.

    how do you clean the MAF??
    im just stumped because everything i try/test is ok??

    8) phil, i clean the maf with carby cleaner pressurepak, sounds like you have the desease my disco has.
    when it runs rough now i just select neutral, turn the key off wait a little bit and restart, all this while still rolling - remembering that the road must be straight - or the steering might lock!

    once again
    Make sure genuine rotor. should cost about $30
    Clean MAF with no residue electronic cleaner from Jaycar. Spray into little hole and you will see 2 wires there.

    If seems regular miss on one cylinder, identify cylinder by removing plug leads one by one until no extra miss. make sure you ground plug lead or you will blow up amplifier. 14CUX will compensate of course but you will notice a difference on a good cylinder.
    Swap plug, if no change, swap wire, if no change suspect injector.
    swap injector, as many die in cleaning. I lost 3.
    Could be injector, injector plug or loom. plugs sometimes break wires at top. If little square gasket not fitted, then water can corrode contacts.
    If you do not find it then get can of petrol, pour on car and light.

    i have just had what sounds like the exact same problem with my '89 3.5.
    After replacing just about everything ignition wise, i still had problem and mine being duel fuel it wouldn't run on gas.
    Finally took it to Smithy's in Bayswater thinking it had to be conected to the gas.
    And.......
    It was the rotor earthing out onto the block.
    I had put in an aftermarket rotor and cap from repco.
    As soon as they put in the genuine ones (read expensive ones) it ran perfect.
    So check the voltage coming out of your coil and then check whats coming out of your spark plug leads. They sould be very close.
    It took 6 weeks and 3 mechanics to find my problem.
    Sounds unbelievable but true that somthing so small and non genuine can cause so many problems.

    Aftermarket rotors buttons often cause problems on these engines.

    thanks guys!
    the rotor and cap were replaced with new ones from allanH from
    british4x4 bout 1yr ago. there is not even a sign of carbon on the contacts
    either. i assume that they are OEM ones as they came LR stickers and part
    numbers.

    im looking at the injector plugs and wiring next. all the rubber boots on the top of the injector plugs are cracked/broken.

    i'll just keep changing things one at a time! its not gonna get the better
    of me!
