    Check rear your gravel shields.

If you have a puma and has done a few K's on rough roads, check the shields on the rear axle that keep crap out of the disc / pad area. I had the traction control light come on and found that the left hand rear shield had vibrated so much that metal fatigue had set in and the shield had dislodged. This was due to the areas around the three fixing bolts cracking and letting the whole shield loose to where it just rattled around on the axle housing, dislodging the abs sensor. Luckily it did not damage the sensor as it did on my td5 defer, which then cost me a new sensor.
I pulled it off and repaired it and then looked at the other side and it was about to fall off too, so I had two to do. So next time you are under your defer check those shields to save you grief at a later date.

Yep, A weak point they are. Mine on the Deefer lasted about 40thou, welded and reinforced did about another 20 before I turfed them. The Disco lasted about the same once it got on the corrugations that make up my road, Considering it had 212ks on when I got it showed just how little dirt it had seen in its life! Have not noticed any negative results without them.

PS Just noticed your link Alien, They look like what we need I had only migged large washers over mine which did not spread the stress enough!

Mine went in a scrap pile somewhere in the Kimberley in 2014. I think the ones off my old Rangie ended up in a bin in Alice Springs after carrying them half way home from the Gibb in 2001. I have not missed them.

Have you had excessive inside disc pad wear as result of no shields?
I've read reports, particularly if doing sand work of inner pads wearing quicker than expected.

Next job for me is to fit the Nuget Stiffies I got through BCC.

I'm tempted to ditch the front ones on the RRS. I don't know why but the front right picks up dirt and stones and then squeals everytime I look at a gravel road. Mechanic swears everything is as it should be.

Mine have long been in the bin.

I think these reports might come from those with low/negative offset wheels, where the rotor can sometimes be exposed to sand flicked up from the front wheels. On more conventional wheels you should be fine, as I have been (touch wood).

I've recently fitted Nuggets 'Stiffy's'(his sense of humour......not mine), went on as advertised and the reinforcement is considerable. Judging by the amount of offroad work Nugget's done...If it's good enough for him, it's good enuff for me!

    I recommend them.

Have not noticed any increase disc pad wear since the removal. If I refit them with Nuggets bits it will only be for aesthetic reasons,

My fronts got ditched and the rears repaired. I'll take a photo of the dirt build up that still occurs.

    Happy Days
