Correct.... The TD4 is the same lump that's fitted to the BMW 320 diesel and has nothing to do with the TD5.

The original 'L' series diesel is IIRC a Perkins design.

BMW was stuck with the L series when it took over Landrover. As soon as it could BMW replaced the L series with the TD4 - hence the two vastly different engines (in my view the TD4 is not necessarily better than the L series - just different) with the only common bit really being 4 cylinders and being just under 2 litres.

It just does not make sense that is all. BMW purchased the entire Rover Group in 1994, and Rover cars continued with the L Series up until April this year when they went belly-up. Why would they use two different engines and why would they be the exact same capacity - 1951cc.

They are not the same capacity.

L series - 1994cc, Bore 84.5mm, Stroke 88.9mm, single OHC, 2 valve head, external rubber timing belt, 19.5:1 compression ratio, power about 72 kw

TD4 - 1951cc, Bore 84mm, Stroke 88mm, double OHC, 4 valve head, internal simplex timing chain, 18:1 compression ratio, power about 84 kw

They are clearly different engines

The sole similiarity between them is that they are diesel, 4 cylinder, and turbo intercooled.
