given that the block was used for 50 years and slipped liners only became the norm for th last 5, is it safe to say only the capacity increase is the issue?

Partly when bored from 3.5 to 3.9 but mainly heat (running temp) because D1 3.9 was generally safe but d2 4.0 (exactly the same Cc as 3.9 D1 had some liner shift).

Yes this is my line of thinking. so we will see, like i have said, i have caught the engine relatively early in its life span. so we will see the pros and cons of lowering the engine temp to 80 degrees celsius.

I don't know how you could lower coolant temp to 80 if say you are in Qld. And for a 4.6 even worse. On a 40 degree day working it I just don't see how that's possible. Cheers
