New member needs help!

Hi Phill,
I’m running standard 235/70R16 BFGoodrich A/T. At one time I tried a new set of 235/85R16 to lift the axles another 1.5 inches. I couldn’t keep it in top gear on the flat towing a light weight (well balanced) camper trailer. I’d accelerate to 105kmh before kicking into top then gradually lost speed until it kicked down again. I sold the new tyres as 2nd hand for $100 each and went back to standard.

I’ve always shied away from dealer service departments. I’ve known some qualified mechanics at dealers (not LR unfortunately) who got to supervise now and then but rarely worked on the cars. That was left up to the apprentices. I did get the electrics in the driver’s window fixed at Southport LR not long ago. They seemed okay.

If the tank is only 80l I think I’ve been running on air more than once. I thought it was 90l but am not positive.

Is the 400 kms you are getting on a tank the odometer reading without adjusting for the 32” rubber? If so, you can add another 10.7% for an actual distance 443 km. or about 18l per 100km.

I’ll take the recommendation for Rick’s 4x4 if he has the proper diagnostic equipment. If not, I’ll have a diagnostics done by Bruce Lynton LR in Southport and see what they come up with first. In the crystal ball I can see a complete new exhaust system including extractors, possibly ICE HT leads (they sound good) a freer flowing air filter, injector service, fuel pump checked, change vacuum advance and complete tune up.
I’ve thought about it, but there is no way I’m going to sell the Disco. It’s got too much character.

Fuel tank is 89 litres but the light comes on at about 78-80l.

From the handbook fuel consumption for a 3.9 auto is

simulated urban 19.6l/100km (about right)
constant 90kph 10.5l/100km (in ya dreams)
constant 120kph 13.4l/100km (a bit optimistic) - 14.5 would be more like it.

Before you go seeking other air filters, have a look at the topic in this forum from a couple of days ago about that very subject.

Not saying it is right, wrong or whatever but it is worth reading.

Interesting figures. I thought the tank was close to 90 litres. I get about 22l per 100km around town. I feel this is ok. Highway travel (not towing) I get about 20l / 100km if I sit on 100kmh and a lot worse at 110kmh. This is what I can’t understand. If it was down to 15 or 16 I’d be over the moon.

Septimus – I did look at that filter test article. I have often wondered if freer flowing filters compromised the actual filtering of dust etc. It seems logical to me that there would be a compromise. I’m still planning on giving it a try as I feel the Safari snorkel helps reduce foreign matter intake.

Kenjo - my point is that my car is very similar to yours and is very much standard. So you should be getting around 20 around town and somewhere around 15 at 110kph on the highway. By all means fit better air filters etc but at the end of the day there is some underlying issue that should be addressed first - I think it may be time for the professionals as suggested by others.

yep that is with the 32's.

garry is right, it also could be as simple as a sticky brake piston or incorrect wheel alignment. 8O

You’re advice is well received and I plan to sus out the problem of lack of power and extra poor economy before any mods are done. My vehicle has character and has reliably taken me into and out of some fairly tight spots in the past. I will get it back up to steam but won’t stop there. The mods I mentioned are probables I can see in the crystal ball. It’ll take time but I plan to have one of the sweetest running Discos in Oz.

I’m hoping that Rick’s 4x4 on the Gold Coast will be able to help me accomplish this feat.
