    300TDI to 4BD1/4BD1T

I had an Isuzu diesel County the 80s/90s and it was the best off road motor I've ever experienced. Recently I bought a 300TDI, and cooked it. Why did the temp gauge read normal ??
Anyway, I'm very interested in replacing it with another 4BD1, but am unsure what is involved. For instance:

Will the County/Perentie Isuzu bell housing mate up to the R380 gearbox?

Will the County/Perentie flywheel accept the R380 input shaft ? (i.e. correct shaft dimensions and no of splines etc)

Is the gearing going to be ok - the 300TDI produces max power 1000 RPM higher than the Isuzu. -Will this necesitate changing gear ratios in the gearbox in order to get a decent top speed from the lower revving Isuzu? Would fitting a transfer box from a diesel County fix that?

Am I better off putting an automatic transmission in? An early model ZF (hydraulic/cable actuation) from a disco seems the easiest to adapt. -I'm a fan of auto for off road use: many agricultural and all earthmoving machines use auto, and even the best drivers stuff up manual gear changes and break traction sometimes.

I'm opening up a big can of worms here. Maybe I'm best just rebuilding the 300TDI.....

    Appreciate all advice and thoughts,
    Cheers, Whytie

I wouldnt consider the R380 or ZF auto for an Isuzu donk, GM auto or MSA isuzu box would be my choice.
You dont say what vehicle but can we assume its a county/ defender ?

    Thanks loanrangie.
    Yep, 96 Defender.
Why the GM Auto? Is it 4, 5, 6 speed? Where can u get em? What price? Is it hard or expensive to mate up to the transfer box? Need different size propshafts no doubt.
Is the MSA box a manual?

I did this by simply buying a Perentie wreck and moving the body over. Much less fabrication, no engineering, galvanised chassis, jerry storage and decent recovery points to boot. If you can still find a Perentie wreck, I'd go that route.

Just buy the isuzu county currently in the markets section. Great value considering it's already got all the upgraded/rebuilt driveline bits.

You don't need an auto with the 4bd1. As you already know they are great off-road - so much so that I keep having to remind SWMBO that it's NOT an auto, and it would probably prefer to be down a gear than pulling at 1000rpm.

While the conversion is possible, I would consider the suggestions above. The biggest problem is likely to be finding an engineer to approve the conversion, as I suspect the 4BD1 does not meet the emissions standards required for at least the later 300Tdi vehicles.

Definitely the case regarding emissions in VIC, but not 100% sure about WA.

On the OP's auto question - I'm not aware of anyone actually successfully running an auto behind a 4BD1/T in a LR. Definitely ZF's don't handle it going by others experience with them.
Plenty of talk about autos, some have run them, some say they've got a successful design, but don't think anyone actually has one running that would be considered proven.

Ive recently gone down the same route but with the lt95 gearbox. I bought the box and 4bd1t engine both out of an ex army 6x6.

Only major modification was engine mounts but lots of little fiddly things as you would imagine.

Engineer is happy with it so far in NSW (going into 1998 defender)

All up i think it will cost around about $4000 on top of what the engine and gearbox cost, so definitely not a cheap option if you can get a good used 300tdi.

Well done. Wish we could do it in VIC
Out of interest, what year is the engine and was the engineer interested in the year of the 6x6?
