Does low oil level result in the case of the gearbox being hotter, or is it just the gears inside?
Would a simple temperature gauge/alarm like an engine watchdog give the driver an indication of low oil?

I wondered about that too. I think that, as the R380 holds so little oil, any warning of temp increase in the housing would come too late to save the box, but that is purely a guess. I wish Dave ( Ashtrans ) would chime in. Maybe I'll email him.

I'm still thinking that the pressure switch connected to the built in transmission temp warning would be enough, especially that the wiring should be already there

Is that wiring present in all cars? Of course it will be there in a D2, but what about MA type D1?

AFAIK the M reg auto D1s aslo have the transmission temp warning so it's a big chance for the wiring to be there unused on manuals, but the warning lamp it's certainly in the instrument pack so it can be joined if the wiring is not there

Take a look maybe you find the unused plug around there, a squear(ish) plug with black and purple/black wires in it:

I fitted the V8's TC temp sensor/switch to my TD5 but as already suggested, by the time the housing gets excessively hot from low oil, the gear teeth and bearings may have already been damaged. I also used the gearbox high temperature instrument cluster indicator for my low oil pressure monitor.

Even my manual 84 RRC had the unused temp switch connector, discovered when fording a river that triggered the 'auto gearbox overheating' warning light.

Got a reply from Dave Ashcroft:

    Hi,

A float switch would be ideal in the filler plug hole but the problem
is that you have very little room inside as the gears are only about
    15-20mm away,

A temp sensor may help but as suggested this is just checking the oil
temp, I don't know if this would rise significantly before damage
would occur to the gears if lever was low,

    Regards

    Dave Ashcroft

    So there you go.

I say again, my idea is to fit an adjustable pressure switch set to minimum there not a temp swicth cos the effect on the warning light would be the same and if there's no pressure in the cooler it's certainly some trouble
