Thread: camshaft carrier - camshaft TOO TIGHT !!

Try running a straight edge along the cam saddles, did you mark the cam saddle caps so they went back in the same position they were removed from.

    - no sir, I did NOT mark them. But I will get a straight edge and check this out....

Also put a straight edge on the bearing journals of the cam shaft, did you check the length on the valve springs to make sure they are not binding and jambing the camshaft.

    - no, I have NOT checked on the valve springs. I will definitely go ahead and take everything apart again, and check for this

If the cam bearing saddles are out of alignment, you can have the caps machined and a new cam bore align bored.

    - I'm hoping that this can be done. I will take the head to the machine shop again this week. fingers crossed !

If the TD5 has no combustion chamber in the head and has only a flat surface, then depending on how much was machined from the head surface the valves seats and valves may need to be recessed to clear the piston, a good machine shop would/should have done that as normal procedure,

    - I do not have information on this, I know the valve seats were cleaned, but I do NOT think they performed the recess of the valves to clear for the piston.

thanks for your help Frank. Like I said, I will take the head into the shop again this week and hope for the best.

I will keep this thread up to date of what's going on.

    cheers

    Hey there,

sorry to bug you with the same problem, ....

I am using the SAME head bolts, I did NOT buy new ones.

Could this be my problem?? Could the fatigue of the bolts + what was skimmed off the head be what is causing everything to tighten up??

I will take the head to the machine shop Tomorrow, and have them measure everything up.

But this question did come to my mind.... Possibility??

    thanks,

    thanks,
You should use new bolts each time you replace the gasket, i know TDI bolts can be re-used but not sure about the TD5.
There is a minimum clearance for the valves to head surface so it that has been exceeded then the valve seats need to be recessed as mentioned earlier on, plus you should have matched the cam caps to their respective mounts.

    thank you loanrangie,

but the TD5 doesn't have caps... does it? it's the camshaft carrier which is one full piece.

where could I find the minimum clearance for the valves to head surface?? does the Haynes manual offer this info??

    thanks for your input

    Valve standown specs -

    Inlet valve A = 0.555 to 0.825 mm (0.022 to
    0.032 in)
    Exhaust valve B = 0.545 to 1.35 mm (0.021 to
    0.053 in)

If cam is tight then possibly over torqued ?

    thanks,

The bolts, no, most likely not.

the head skimming if not done correctly with all the information here is looking like the most likely culprit.
