Extending Bump Stops ??

Why do bump stops need to be extended on the Disco, seems to defeat the purpose of a lift when articulating in the bush.

As far as i'm aware a bump stop should only be altered to stop the shock bottoming out before the diff hits the bumpstop. if you have Stock suspension then you should not have problems.

OK then if the shocks are long enough i shouldn't have any dramas.

I have been told that 100 series front Toyota shocks will fit, being eye to pin like the DII, i can get these for nothing will they do until i can get some good ones.

if youve seen lurch go around a corner it might make it a bit easier to understand......

he leans till the bumpstops stop him from rolling over onto his side.....

sway bars will do the same job but prevent decent articulation......

The problem is that a longer shock as a longer compressed length.
You need to lengthen your bumbstops so as to not have the shock acting as the bump stop.

Thats why the raise the towers a little bit so that a bump stop extension is not needed...And the fact is that you still get full up travel and more down 8)

You need to measure and see.

I will extend them 45mm as i'm going 4" up, well 3" in reality, just to be sure as i have to extend the brake lines and ABS lines anyway, then i will measure them and to see if the extension is needed, if not then i will take them out or adjust to suit.

Thanks

With a lift the new springs sometimes have more coils too. You need to stop the spring becoming coilbound & acting as the bumpstop.

All shocks on the D2 are eye to eye, so the LC units wont fit. For the Lovells 4" lift the shock that fits is the Patrol rears at aout 70mm longer. The longer shock doesn't close up as much as a stocker and the longer bumpstops stop the shock from bottoming and breaking. With the front I've looked at raising the front shock towers but it wasn't worth it as the springs bind up at about the same time. In terms reducing the travel, you really are increasing the available travel, which is not the same as articulation, as the longer shocks travel more than the shorter shocks.
Cheers
