Called karcraft for new pump price and they told me LR price.
$12-1500 was from mechanic - estimate.

Hello Simon, just logged into this post for the first time. My daughter had a similar problem in her Reno12 some years ago. I eventually discovered that the fuel line was almost completely clogged; the fuel pump would force enough fuel through to fill the filter and line to carby so the motor would run until that fuel was used then stop. It was a long drive home!
I don't know whether this could be a problem when you've got a sedimenter in the fuel line. However, for $4000 or so, I'd be happy to come up, undo a bolt and turn the motor over to see what happens!

Good question.
He's always done the right thing by me, and he's turned into a bit of a mate.
I suspect that he doesn't really want to have anything to do with the problem. From what he has said diesels are simple and diesel problems are simple. Except when they aren't, and then they're a real bugger.
My wishful thinking is that it's a simple problem like a fuel line blockage or a diaphragm.

I thought I should also describe the problem for those who don't want to go back to the start of the thread.
Seems to idle fine. When put under load it will go about 200 metres, and then dies and either won't respond or stalls. If I wait a couple of minutes the engine will turn over again and will drive another hundred metres or so. The times I've tried to drive it with the problem it is a bit sluggish like starting on a really cold day, and can take a couple of goes to start.
And the final problem, father-in-law is in hospital dying and I didn't have the time (or the skill, or the patience, or the shed) to do it myself. Now I don't have any time.
To paraphrase the mechanic, 'at the moment the car goes. Work out what you're going to do before you start taking bits off that aren't going to go back on without a whole bunch of cash.'

when i had a look.....there seemed to vaccuum in the fuel line....
like a pump not sucking from the tank.....
possibly a blockage....
can you check to make sure you have free flowing fuel from the tank to
the pump first....? it seemed a bit restricted....
if you hand prime the lines with the new pump does it stop pumping when
it builds up pressure in the lines....?</span>

Can't remember, but having replaced lift pump meant that it didn't die when idling.
Seems to me that possible simple problems as suggested by guys on here are either leak in fuel line or hole in injector pump diaphragm.
Nasty solution is injector pump.
Is there anything else that can go wrong?
