    Defender Puma EGT levels

    Hi again,

Have any of you Defender owners with 2.4 or 2.2 Tdci engines fitted EGT gauges?

If so, can you tell me what sort of peak full-load EGT readings you seen? Pre- or post-turbo? Standard or fueled-up?

    Thanks,
    Ian &

Ive had been off line for a fortnight so apologies for not seeing the thread

I've fitted the probe post tubo in the blanking plug.
On the first proper run it was Melbourne to Sydney towing the camper with gear on the roof rack for the Expo.
Peak reading was @525 on the steeper hills and it sat @400-450 on the flats dropping going down hill as expected.
This was during the day with ambient temperatures @25deg for a guess.
The run home was in the dark with cooler ambient temperatures with similar readings.
I have noticed with out the trailer on there is drop of temperature when on the flats(@50-100drop)peak is similar on the steeper hills.
I've got a off road road run on this weekend so I'll see what happens when towing in low range.
I didn't change my driving style so I could get a base reading.
I've found easing of the throttle a little sees a small drop in temperatures over the steep hills(and probibly saving 300mls of fuel) as expected.
I also saw little difference using 6th gear or dropping to 5th on the steeper hills.
Other posts suggest using 5th is better on the box under heavy loads but I happily cruise in 6th.

Set up is a 2•2 with no fuel/intercooler enhancements.
Total weight with camper was 4ton.
80% off the Sydney trip was done on cruise control.

Reading on here prior to deciding on probe location suggests a 200deg difference pre and post turbo.
There was descusion on other forums of probe tips breaking of after a few years of use so rather than risk turbo damage I put the probe post turbo in the blanking the plug(as said above).
I'm not chasing accurate figures but using the gauge as a guide of what's happening.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers, Kyle

Many thank Kyle. That's exactly the sort of info I was after.

I suspect I'm the source of the 200 deg C (or more correctly 200 K, for scientific pedants...) temperature drop measurement across the turbo, having logged both pre- and post-turbo EGTs on my fueled-up 300Tdi years ago.

The chances of a thermocouple probe tip failure with a fully-sheathed thermocouple is negligible. I've never heard of one in over 15 years.

The problematic ones are exposed tip thermocouples promoted by some Chinese-sourced EGT gauge suppliers. These are promoted as being fast reacting (which they are, but unnecessarily so for EGT applications). But they can and do shed bits of the very hard ceramic-like insulation between the exposed thermocouple tip and the open-ended outer sheath - not nice for a turbine wheel spinning at 100,000+ rpm!

The 200 deg/k comment was from a few respected posters.
Going on what I've seen I figure it's about right.

I'm not sure what tip I have but the gauge I bought was one that others here have used.
The gauge has a silver trim and white background changing to green at night.
It gives me that "origional" feel while being functional
    Cheers, Kyle
