Low beam short circuit. did oil do it?

Have to concur. While I am no expert, I would be very surprised if ATF contamination of a 12V circuit would be sufficiently conductive to blow a 30A circuit. That's dead short material. I would doubt that a short like that would occur with 240V AC through ATF. SF says coincidence. So do I.

I do have to say, and I'm guilty of this myself, but there are some seriously untidy electrical connections evident in that photo.

Agreed, but understand that it's like that because I've removed the relay unit and used wood stews to temporarily attach the pairs of wires in their respective order, to strips of cardboard. I did that because I wasn't sure if I had the original wiring diagram and didn't want any crossed wires when I put it all back together again.
