Transfer Probs
Hi All,
The transfer case in my 00 TD5 Defender has started making strange noises seeming to come from the front of it.
The noise is there with the gearbox in neutral however seems to go when the transfer is in neutral.
Looking at the front flange of the transfer I noticed that I can pull it in and out abut 3mm - where as on my 90 I can move it at all (as I imagine it should be).
Is this normal?
Where could the play be coming from?
Any suggestions??

sounds like something has collapsed in the transfer on the output shaft somewhere....
drop the oil out and inspect it to see what it tells you....(transfer case...not engine)
look for different metals....the bigger the pieces the worse the damage.....
i think a few poeple have rebuilt their transfer cases so they may be able to give some advice...
there is also one for sale in the for sale threads.....

When you say the front flange moves in and out, do you mean the flange slides on the shaft, or does the shaft stay in relation to the flange and both move.
If the flange moves on the shaft, tighten the nut on the end as it's causing excessive play in the bearing and it may be saved yet.
If the flange stays fixed to the shaft, then the play is in the bearing, and the bearing will have to be replaced and the gear on the shaft may have to be replaced also.

Unfortunately both the flange and the shaft slide in and out!
Is it possible to remove the front output housing without dropping the transfer case from the car??

It appears that someone in the factory left the front circlip that holds front output bearing in place! Great!
Have not yet removed the front housing to see what untold damage it has done inside!
