    Axle Stuck

My son's newly purchased Isuzu County has just broken something in the front drive.

It will only drive with CDL engaged. Without CDL, front tailshaft turns and vehicle does not move.

Today we started to dismantle to find the source. We have removed the LH axle and all is good.

The RH axle however, we cannot get it to come out.

This suggests to me that maybe the axle spline has stripped in the diff spider gear, therefore the part of the undamaged spline that is past the the spider gear is preventing us from getting the axle out.

Tomorrow I am going to reassemble the opposite side, refit the tail shaft, lock the centre diff and then put some sthilsens on the axle and try to turn it to align the good spline to get it out.

If this fails, are there any suggestions of how to get it out?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

You may be able to see what is going on in the diff via the level and/or drain holes.

Did you manage too get the stuck axle out?
Curious to see what the end result is for the lack of drive.

If you have a standard diff centre you can get a long bar and knock it out from the good side.

Yes we got it out. My theory as to why it would not come out was wrong, but what I said I was going to try did work to get it out.

Problem, broken axle. I suspect that the reason it would not come out was due to the groove that was worn inside the spider gear from driving it home with the axle banging around.

So when we got it out I said to my son "ok rip the diff out" After the bolts were undone we had some trouble getting the diff out.

Stupid me, we had put the opposite axle back in and forgotten about it.

isuzurover. The spider gears that are not located by the axles are held in by a pin that covers the axle hole, preventing pushing a piece of pipe or similar from the opposite side.

I recall someone posted recently that a piece of tube flattened in the end will get past the crosspin. May have been a series diff, but makes sense with a county front as the crosspin is smaller diam than an axle.

6mm high tensile rod for future reference.

you can curve low tensile stuff in though the drain or fill plug depending on which end you need to get out, the trick is turning the diff so the cross pin sits the right position to rest the rod on then gently tapping with a hammer.

I know. But there is just enough room to get a suitably shaped drift in there beside the pin.
